Some Quick Notes on Instrument Flying
during WW2
Old Compass Faced Directional Gyros
Worked in the Opposite Direction from the Flat Faced Gyros we learned to fly
with
Like with the wet compass we still use
today think of pulling the desired heading towards you
With the Homing Gauge you can track
to a station but not away from a station
In this case turn to the right
In the case of the Tsili NDB (Non-
Directional- Beacon) home
To the station on the airport then
fly the outbound magnetic heading of 040 degs
After 1 minute turn left a total of
90 degs then immediately to the Right a total of 270 degs
This is called a 90/270 course
reversal also used on strafing runs
Now you can home direct to the
stations 220 deg bearing
using step down altitudes and configuring for
landing
