Special Forces Rescue

The following missions all share the same basic scenario, viewed from each of the different participants.
Special Forces Base Bravo is surrounded by Viet Cong and could be overwhelmed at any time. A flight of Hueys are going in to rescue the Green Berets, with fast jet support.

Huey to the Rescue

Go in hot and clear out the bad guys - watch out for the tree-line in particular.
Land inside the compound and extract the Green Berets to a safe location.
Version 0.2 Now has friendly Hueys and a Phantom for air-support, and many more un-friendly VC's.

Required files

You will need
A Huey e.g. uh1darmy from here (get the seperate .dp file also)
A Phantom e.g. f-4c_pak from Flightsim.com (or f4piics, also from Flightsim.com)
Dan Geiss' Da Nang scenery(from here) (check the fantasy section)

To use a different Huey (or anything else) check out ChPlyrAc on the Utilities page.

To use a different Phantom (or Skyhawk or WHY) use Notepad to edit DaNang1.mis, find Unit_type.12 and change the name to the folder name of your Phantom.
or use ChMissAc from the Utilities page.
I use the .dp file from Captain Slugs CFS f4piics with the f-4c_pak, which is actually an FS-98 Phantom, but I like it...

Installation

Unzip into your combatfs folder
  • the mission file (DaNang1.mis) should automatically go into your missions folder
  • the .dp & .dpo files into your objects_dp folder (overwrite tent_rnd.dp and sandbags.dp, the tent_rnd.dpo and sandbags.dpo files are a back-up of your originals).
  • an FHuey folder should be created in your CFS aircraft folder (see below).
Note uh1darmy uses the Bell-206B panel, if you dont have FS98 you may not have this panel. Get an alternative panel e.g. the Huey panel included in hueyaa98.zip - only problem is the restricted visibility. There are more panels (including a very high visibility one!) at Keiths Helipad

In the aircraft folder, copy the contents of the Uh1darmy folder into FHuey (do NOT overwrite any files). This will create a working 'Fake Huey' for your wingmen. They are more for atmosphere than of any use, you may have to use the X key to get them to the target!
You may want to run Bill Potvins SetScale utility to scale them up to 8.

The mission will be listed under USAAF (apologies to any US Army veterans!).
Listen to those rotor blades as the mission loads!

Notes

You will find that round tents and sandbags in other missions will start shooting at you! If this gets tiresome swap tent_rnd.dp and tent_rnd.dpo, sandbags.dp and sandbags.dpo until you want to fly this mission again.

CFS AI isn't able to fly 'real' helicopters - if you find a chopper it can fly - let me know!

Challenges

  • Fly a Slick - try landing in the SF base without cleaning out the VC first...
  • When you have mastered flying a chopper try flying over the SF Base at 1000+ ft with 'player invincible' set - see how long you can keep control!
  • Fly under the bridge between waypoints 1 and 2

Support Special Forces Rescue (Phantom)

Refly Mission 1 from the cockpit of a Fast Mover - a USAF F4C Phantom II.

Version 0.2

  • Mission starts on the pad - kick the tyres and light the fires, taxi-out to runway 4 and take-off.
Try and catch up with your flight lead, he's not real patient....
  • Use your bombs and rockets on the VC in the trees, be very carefull if you go for those nearer the SF base.
  • Watch out for Migs - save your 20mm Vulcan gun-pod for the Gomers.

Required files

You will need (in addition to the files for Mission 1)
A Mig-19 e.g. mig-19v2 by Eric C. Johnson from here Pakistani markings - but will you get close enough to see?
A SkyHawk e.g. A4ESKYHK.ZIP by Paul Kimberling from Flightsim.com
Both are FlightShop planes and will need converting. Use SetScale to resize them (I suggest a scale of 8) and SetDp to resize the damage boxes to match.
Thanks to OneLoveButterfly for helping test this one, and the next.

*** New *** Support VietCong attack on Imperialist base (Mig)

Return to Mission 1 as Gomer-2 for a fresh viewpoint on the Vietnam conflict!

Version 0.1

Required files

None - if Mission 2 works, so will this

*** New *** Never fear, Spookies here - Close Air Support with the AC-47 Gunship

Use those Miniguns carefully - there are good guys down there as well!
The 'correct' technique is to orbit the target and send a cone of fire down, I find this too hard so I just cruise past, blasting the VC whilst they blast me...

Version 0.1

Required files

DragonSlayers Ac-47 from here
You will also need to increase the ammo load in the .Dp file (or set 'unlimited ammo')

*** New *** Carrier-based Close Air Support

The ultimate challenge - can you complete the mission AND land safely back aboard the Forrestal at night!
Try to descend at about 120kts with full flaps, spoiler and gear down. Reduce to 100 kts over the fantail, cut power and apply brakes...
Heres one I prepared earlier, I actually landed at night and changed the time to brighten up the screenshot - honest!

Version 0.1

Required files

You will need Dan Geiss' USS Forrestal CVA-59 (cva59-12.zip) from here
I havent found a Skyhawk panel yet, so use whichever you like best.

Coming Up

Skyraider and more Huey & Phantom missions are planned, hopefully spread across a few more scenarios.

Realism

Many aspects of these missions are unrealistic - CFS is after all a WWII simulation, but I believe they give a good impression of some aspects of the Vietnam air war. Dropping a Huey into a hot LZ is quite a challenge, as is hauling a big Phantom around the sky after a nimble Mig, with just an inaccurate SU-23 gun-pod for a weapon. (Tip: keep your speed up, better to extend and re-engage than get into a knife-fight with a Mig).
Experts may note that the Vietnamese had very few Mig 19's, and those were used later than '67. I've just discovered this so will rework the missions with Mig 17s when I find one!

By avoiding the high-tech aspects of the later stages of the war the limitations of CFS are much less obvious.
