The "Dora" was the logical next step for the FW190, as the original BMW 801 of the A/F/G models was in great demand, and an inline engine offered the possibility of possibly higher performances. After trialling various possibilities, the Junkers Jumo 213 was selected. As a result of the modified centre of gravity, a fuselage extension was added between the rear fuselage and the tail unit, but otherwise, the airframe aft of the wing leading edges remained essentially unchanged. Like the radial-engined FW190, the Dora was a modular design, with tail units, wings, fuselages and engine "power-eggs" being manufactured largely separately and assembled at a number of centralised plants. The result was that there were rarely two aircraft the same...It is widely recognised that the Dora was Germany's best mass-production fighter aircraft of WW2, equivalent in many ways to the British Hawker Tempest.
