RH F4F-4 Raby 9-F-1 2024-05-21

This is a repaint of the FDGv2 Donationware F4F-4 Wildcat found here:http://www.donationware.net/ F4F-4 black 9-F-1, flown by Lt Cdr John Raby, VF-9, USS Ranger, Operation Torch, November 1942 Aside from the distinctive yellow ring around the national insignia applied for Operation Torch, this F4F-4 otherwise wears standard markings. Most of Baby's pilots were extremely inexperienced, many having less than 25 carrier landings. Unfortunately for them, they came up against some highly experienced French fighter pilots, some of whom had even been aces during the Battle of France. Moreover, the Curtiss Hawk 75 was more agile than the F4F-4, and the Vichy French had the advantage of flying over their own territory. Nevertheless, Torch proved a rela?tively inexpensive training ground for the F4F pilots. Raby himself downed a Leo 45 and a Curtiss Hawk, claiming a second Hawk as a probable.
