Can this be done in the FS9.cfg?

This is how I have the airplanes separated in FSX and I'd like to do the same for FS9. It keeps the main "Airplanes" folder from getting too overwhelmed and each of those folders has a "Hangar" folder so that even planes within the main folders can be dumped into it so that only the airplane(s) I want to fly regularly show up. The FS9.cfg file has a [MAIN] section, but it only contains about 4 or 5 lines similar to what's at the very beginning of this FSX section. Anyone know if this is possible?:salute:

Personally, I don't know if it will work or not. If you don't get a satisfactory reply, suggest you import 2-3 folders to begin with into FS9 and see if that works. If it does, import 3 more .... and so on.

AFAIK you cannot use anything else than the default .\Aircraft folder in FS9. Out of curiosity I tried it but no joy.

BTW: The simplest way to block aircraft from showing up in FS9 or FSX is to rename the Aircraft.cfg file into e.g. Aircraft.cfgX

Interesting...

With my prior FS9 install, I moved the aircraft folder to an external drive. The primary reason was to manage my HD space on my older compute which was only 60 Gb, but the secondary reason was to make it easier to locate a specific aircraft folder for adding paints or editing. I still do this on my new setup with FS9 and FSX to keep things organized and speed up loading times.

Out of curiosity Falcon, are the objects (like FleetAirArm aircraft) still available in the additional folders you created? What I mean is that in FSX when you Select Aircraft, do only the main Airplanes show or do you get the aircraft in the other folders as well?

Thanks WH. . .How did you setup the reference to the moved aircraft folder in FS9? That might be my ticket as thus far the idea of setting up internal folders similar to FSX in FS9 hasn't worked. It doesn't cause any crashes or anything, it simply makes those aircraft invisible to FS9.

As for FSX, because the "Airplanes" folder is contained inside a main folder "SimObjects", all I had to do was setup the folders you see in my example and add those to the path reference in the FSX.cfg file. Then it was just another path for FSX to locate. . .no problem. . .all aircraft from all the folders show up in the aircraft selection window as before, but since only the airplanes I happen to be flying at the time are located in those folders, those are the only ones that show up. It cuts the aircraft selection window down to just those airplanes, rather than scrolling through 200 airplanes and their liveries. . . .I have maybe 20 airplanes active with only a few liveries at the most per airplane and that's all FSX has to load at any given time.

My take is dummy folders with .cfg files referencing the location of the "real" folders.

Or he just moved the texture files somewhere else and referenced them accordingly in the "texture=" lines in the aircraft.cfg.

If you want to hide certain aircraft from the UI, try BBQHideAI. It should be on Avsim.

- Edit:

Peronally, I sort my "Aircraft" folder by prefixing any folder used for AI aircraft, i.e. "RAI_AIA_722". If you do this with your user-flyble aircraft as well, you get a neat and tidy folder layout.

Something like:
"AI_"
"GA_"
"Airliner_"
"Helo_"

Cool.. .I'll give that a try...thanks Bjoern:salute:

My external drive (I:\) has a root folder named FS 2004. Under FS 2004 I have folders for Addon Scenery, Aircraft, Aircraft - Helos, Manuals, Keys.

The aircraft moved from my main FS9 folder into the Aircraft which has subfolders by developers. For example, all my Aerial Foundry Hornets can be found at: I:\FS 2004\Aircraft\Aerial Foundry. IN several instances I have a lot of aircraft from one developer, so I may just create a folder for one aircraft - such as the JustFlight Mossie.

To save space on my older computer, I moved many of the manuals to a Manual subfolder which made it easier to look things up rather than having to open the individual Aircraft folder.

You may also note that I have a folder for Keys. These are also arranged by Developer products. Whenever I acquired a payware aircraft, I saved the install key to this folder. This has been a real blessing when I migrated everything to my new setup, since all I had to do was plug in the external drive between the older and newer computer and all my install keys were there.

One last note. When I move folders from the active FS9 directory to the external drive, I use the shortcuts of Ctrl-X to cut and Ctrl-V to paste.

This may seem like a lot of work, but it's really not that bad since I seldom have to move folders back and forth.
