Cable Company tried to stick it to me...but I am smarter than they are

Cable Company tried to stick it to me...but I am smarter than they are

Called the cable company earlier to drop the cable portion of our Triple Play Bundle. The guy said that the monthly bill with just phone and internet would be $99.71. WHAT?!?!?!?! We pay $147 a month for all three. And when I paid the cable bill last month at the local office, the gal there told me that the price for having phone and internet would be around $74 a month plus taxes and fees. I just called back, got a different rep...and the price he gave me for having phone and internet....$79.71...and that includes the taxes, fees, and all. A $20 difference between the two prices given by 2 different reps less than an hour apart.....some people would have been taken by this...but not me.

if you have now joined the ranks of people who have renounced television, then i applaud you

:applause:

Haven't had one for years; and do not regret it. I only watch videos with the family on occasion.

It is amazing how much you can fit in a day's time when you are not wasting hours watching television.... :applause:

I went around 2 years without television, and recently got it back again last year. I tell you if Comcast tried pulling a stunt like that on me it would be cancelled in a heartbeat. It is a nice luxury, but definately not needed. I don't even humor their games. I had a similar situation with T-mobile and so I just said cancel my plan. Cause my contract was up. Their tune completely changed after that. It is amazing the leeway these companies have when they realize you are not bound by their rules. I haven't had any issues since.

We've had problems with our cable, phone and internet service since we signed on almost two years ago. About 18 months ago they decided that the problem was in the underground main line in front of the house and said that they'd replace it. In the meantime, they strung a temporary above ground line between two powerline poles with it also being tied to trees in between the poles. We've still been having all kinds of problems. Our contract is up in July. They finally got the new underground line buried and hooked up on Friday. I'm not too sure we're going to renew if that's the best they can do.

We rarely watch TV but it is nice to have when you want to. A year ago I switched to the local fiber optics netword for phone, internet and cable. We haven't looked back since.

There is very little on TV that I will miss. American Pickers, Pawn Stars, Antiques Road Show, and the mixed martial arts cage fighting on Versus. Other than that, TV is a dead zone for the most part. An occasional Military or History or Nat Geo show here and there.

We will be giving NetFlix a 30 day try. They now have it so that you can watch movies through the Wii gaming system. $8.99 a month for unlimited movie watching...might be worth while.

The ONLY reason I still have satellite tv is because my ex father in law (who lives in an apartment on my property) offered to pay for it, along with his subscription. I don't watch it though. I do NOT miss TV, or the commercials. I understand the commercials pay for the programming, etc...., but I choose not to watch the d.....n things. I can't push the Mute button fast enough.

The only thing I watch is Netflix, period. Movies, nothing but movies.

Just finished watching District 9 on Netflix....took forever because Deb kept "Honey"ing me.

Netflix is great. I have the basic $8.99 package and I do 2-3 movies a week depending on how fast I can mail 'em back for the next one in my queue. :) I also have Turner Classic Movies and the Encore channels on the cable, and that's about all I watch. The wife has her Filipino channels where she keeps up on all the graft and corruption news and also her teleserye (soap operas). :d
BTW, if you are interested in WWII history and haven't seen the movie Downfall yet (except in those Hitler parody vids on YouTube), I highly recommend you see it. It was one of my Netflix selections last week. The best dramatization of the last days of Hitler that I've ever seen.

Haven't had TV for almost 10 years now. Refused to pay the extortionists the exorbitant sums they required for cable / satellite. Kids whined on occasion, but we have a massive collection of DVD's, amazing what you can find on the wal-mart $5 rack.....

Sometimes you can get good deals through Amazon.com too............

I buy books, oftimes, for one cent each!!! Yes, there's shipping, but even with that, you can't hardly beat the price!!!

I think I pay a $12/month on that..
I watch it in MY OWN time...

OBIO,

Ask them for some promo,
They won't tell you that IF you don't ask...

Knock on wood...So far my local cable company hasn't done anything stupid other than a complete and utter lack of channels on their "advanced" packages.
They did have a price hiccup that double-charged everyone in town one time...but that was just a billing system upgrade gone awry and they quickly fixed that.
At my apartment I have just the basic package, which is the bare minimum that I need to get their internet service.
Something like 70 channels (with only 3 or 4 that I watch) plus 5Mb internet for $63/mo.

The original History Channel pretty much isn't even worth watching anymore...they might as well rename it to the RealityShow Channel when it hits prime-time evening shows. But I'm not springing for a bigger package to get their military sub-channel...

Food Network, the Outdoor Channel, and two classic movies channels (TCM and a regional one), and Fox or TNT for NASCAR coverage are about the only ones I watch anymore. Too many other things to do. I've also got Hulu if I get the itch for more boob-tube time.

I might switch over to the other company (the local rural telephone co-op) in town once I get set up in a house. Over fiber, they've got a larger base package with more HD for a similar price...plus faster internet. I could add a land-line to the package for another $20-25/mo but I'm happy with just a cell phone so that isn't needed.

The Dish Network guy just left the house a couple hours ago. We dumped Comcast for DSL and a dish and are saving $80 a month. I don't watch a lot of TV and could easily live without it. The wife, on the other hand, would go into convulsions without watching Law and Order, CSI, and NCIS on a daily basis. They are usually recorded and watched later to fast-forward through commercials. I would have a hard time living without internet though. It is my crutch.

We have what I call "basic-basic" cable here. Just enough to be able to say there's cable coming into the house so that we can keep the cable internet online. We get the local channels, plus TBS. Everything else is supposed to be trapped, but those traps don't work above channel 74. As a result, I also get Versus, VH1 Classic, and WGN. I'm also in that group with great cell reception in the house, so the landline has been turned off for a few years now.

Just out of curiosity Tom, what do you pay for that basic cable in your neck of the woods?

We've got something similar here too. Just the semi-local major network channels for something like $15/mo. This town in in a hole, so even with an external antenna the locals (broadcast from 30-70 miles away) don't come in worth a darn. Air reception is even worse since the digital switch.
The basic that I've got is $35/mo for 70-some channels...since I don't watch network anything anymore I went this route.
Either one of them will let you add the internet service to em.

Around 1997, when I first subscribed to DISH, they had a deal where you could pick 10 channels. They quickly eliminated that option because it was a great deal. Most people, I think, would opt for just a few channels, instead of paying for 100 odd channels they never watch, and don't want to pay for.

TV, yeah. That's a sore subject. All commercials, re-runs for the free (so called) channels. Then there's pay-per-view. I call it go broke to view.

7 years ago I called Direct TV and told them cancel it, and that I was tired of paying premium prices for re-runs and commercials. They offered a more expensive package trying to entice me and sweeten the deal. I said cancel it!!

Like most kids, mine whined for awhile off and on. We got the local news via the internet, and watched movies via Netflicks. That made the wife and kids happy. Personally, I didn't miss it in the slightest way. As mentioned above, there is so much time lost sitting in front of the tube.

Recently my wife had surgery on here shoulder. Torn rotater cuff. She wanted TV back while being off work a few months. I agreed. But now the household is back in the same dissarray due from her planting her butt in front of the damn thing all day.

I've never been one to pay for watching something "they" want you to watch. I pay the damn bill. I should have the choice. Now a days things aren't like that anymore.

Anyone ever see the commercial where the father of a daughter cuts down the telephone with a chain saw due to the phone being her appendage? Well, I basically did the same thing. Cept I used a chain hooked to the tow bar of my truck and pulled the whole works right out of the ground. It's almost time to find that chain again :d

The "financial manager" of the marriage handles that bill, but last time I looked the TV portion of the bill was something like $13. The total bill is something like $54.
