Dune Heads

Eoraptor1

SOH-CM-2022
Did anyone else know they were going to take another crack at making Frank Herbert's Dune into a movie? Look HERE: http://www.dunenovels.com/news-and-press

IMO the book has never been done justice on screen. The David Lynch film had some interesting things in it, but the money people came in at the very last moment and chopped the edit up. The SyFy meniseries wasn't bad, but you saw a lot of things that were incongruous if you'd read the books: terrible water discipline, Fremen with pot bellies, and the Imperial Sardaukar were supposed to be so brutal that their opponents soiled themselves when they heard them coming. So what does the costume designer do? Puts them in big floppy hats...

I also think they were trying to remake Paul Atreides into some sort of James Dean figure, which really irritated me. I thought Children of Dune was quite a bit better. They also changed some things about from the books, but they did a better job of capturing their essence IMO.

ALSO: I may have been the last person on Earth to see Avatar. If you haven't read a 1975 book by Alan Dean Foster called Midworld, you may want to check it out; James Cameron surely did. Anyway, hoping to see Robin Hood next week...

I have read the entire Dune series at least 5 times..so I am very much aware of what Dune should be....and totally agree that nothing done on film has done it justice.

I haven't seen Avatar yet...but I have read a lot of Alan Dean Foster's books, including Midworld.

HONOR HARRINGTON!!

from the internet:

An Honor Harrington movie was announced by Echo Valley Entertainment.[1] However, later information suggested that it would actually be a television series, to be written and produced by Peter Sands.[2] When David Weber was asked which actress he envisioned as Honor Harrington, he replied, "I don’t think there’s anyone out there who has the proper combination of height, physicality, and demonstrated acting ability to be 'perfect' for the role, so my mind is fairly open on this topic." Actress Claudia Christian, who plays Susan Ivanova on Babylon 5, has been suggested as a potential candidate; Weber says "She’s much shorter than Honor, but so are most women, and I think she could handle the physicality... I think it’s more important to have someone who can portray Honor’s character and command style than it is to have someone who is six feet two inches tall." Weber's concern is that the director would push Christian to re-create Ivonova's character while playing Honor and "Ivanova’s command style is totally different from Honor’s."[3]
An Honor Harrington video game called Honorverse: The Online Game was announced in August 2008; a beta is scheduled to be released in the Spring of 2010.[4]
An Honor Harrington wargame, Saganami Island Tactical Simulator (SITS), was released at Gen Con in 2005 by Ad Astra Games.[5]

I have read the entire Dune series at least 5 times..

I can't remember how many total times I've been through the series but everytime a new book in the series was released I went back and read all of them from the start each time. Looking at my book shelf with Chapter House, God Emperor, & Heretics added to the original triology, that would make at least 4 read throughs.

During the 70's and early 80's, Frank Herbert was my favorite author. I think I have almost his entire novel collection sitting here. In addition to the regular 70's paper back version of the trilogy, I've an oversized illustrated 70's version of Dune and another first edition 1965 hardback copy that I found at a used book store for twenty five cents. If it had the slip cover on it it would be in near mint condition.

In any of the filmed versions it's always been the depiction of the ornithopters that throw me off. None of them looked like what I was picturing while I read the book.

I liked the original movie version mainly because I think they got the mood right. I'd love to see the Dune trilogy finally done right in the quality of the recent Lord of The Rings.

I'm afraid that Dune is one of those series of books that will not translate well. Too many people have such an enthusiasm that any re-interpetation done in a screen play will do nothing but make them mad.

I would say that that SYFY mini-series probably is closest to the original and captures must of the spirit, but I also did not care for some of the incongruities.

Don't get your hopes up for Robin Hood either....It just gets silly towards the end.

The 1984 David Lynch production. The effects are a bit cheezy but, it was 1984. I thought some of the lesser characters were very well cast by talented but not well known actors.

Thank you for answering, Toastmaker. My favorite thing about the Lynch version was the soundtrack. I still listen to it, in fact. I love Brian Eno's "Prophecy Theme".

RE: ORNITHOPTERS

I always pictured the ornithopters in my head as looking something like an Apache or Super Cobra attack copter with big composite wings instead of rotors. Herbert describes several types of "thopters" including big troop carriers, propelled by jets as well as the afforementioned wings. They aparently had the ability to alter their thrust-to-weight ratio through use of "suspensors" which could partially offset G forces.

Anyway, here's the Ornithopter Zome Home Page. Go HERE: http://www.ornithopter.org/
