i7-950 vs i7-980....stock CPU coolers

Last year I built my new system, based around a quad-core i7-950 using the stock CPU cooler. Last night, I put together a new system for my nephew, based around a 6-core i7-980....using a liquid cooling system. I was given the stock i7-980 CPU cooler. It is a ton bigger than the stock cooler that came with my i7-950.

Will this cooler work on my i7-950 (same socket type) and will I see any noticable drop in my CPU temps? I checked my MOBO and it will hold the cooler. Just want to make sure it will work and will give me worth while resultes before I tear my system apart and do the swap.

The base is the same, so the only limitation would be if the larger cooler will fit your motherboard and/or case. Sometimes, a larger cooler will have clearance problems with on-board components on the MoBo. It's usually not a problem with the OEM coolers though...mostly the huge aftermarket coolers.

Basically...It should but you'll have to try and see.
 
Hmmm...might pass that link on N. A friend of mine built a "980" system last year and has complained since about the noise of the standard cooling fan.
 
I replaced my very efficient and quiet Noctua NH-U92B SE2 cooler with the Corsair Hydro Series H100.
Excellent results with the added bonus of better air flow due to the low profile cooling block.

Getting back to the original question, I'd expect the standard CPU cooler to be larger on the higher spec chip, being the same 'family' the only thing to be aware of is 'case space', as Mike pointed out.
My Noctua just squeezed into my Level 10 GT case, even after I tweaked the position of the RAM cooler, which was a bit of a surprise!
