New from Swingman....Ryan STA and Special

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
I have been watching Swingman build this bird via Facebook pics.....and let me tell you something...that man builds his models like he is building a real freaking plane....very interesting to see how he models and comparing it to how others do their modeling.

I was blessed to be a BETA tester for this bird...and contributed some minor tweaks....very minor let me assure you.

The planes are now up at AVSIM.su:

http://www.avsimrus.com/f/fs2004-ai...ta-sta-special-46579.html?action=download&hl=

In case anyone is wondering...the Ryan Special is a single seat version of the STA.

Tim

PS: I will be rebuilding my system in the next few days.....to clear out a ton of old files, clean up the registry, restore max performance....once I have the system back to 100% I will upload to the library here with Swingman's permission.

Golden Age Simulations did this airplane for FSX (and 3 versions including the "Special") not too long ago, but it is payware. Too late now, but knowing swingmans work, I have to wonder.......(I bought the GAS offering).:salute:

Ryan

Thanks for the heads up Obio.

I've had Bill Lyon's nice little Ryan in the hangar for sometime. It comes in his "Classic Sportsman Package."

I've never been able to download anything from Avsim.rus site, so I look forward to your getting Swingman's permission to upload the plane here.

Good morning Jagdflieger:salute:

Don't know if you've tried this in the past w/Avsim.rus, but in the aircraft's description block there are a couple of "buttons" farther down (about 2/3 of the way) that give you a couple of download options, one for Europe and the other for the U.S. (which I think is "http"). Try hitting that button (on the left) and downloading from there in the usual way. My machine accommodates the Russian setup pretty well, I've never had an issue with downloading from avsim.rus, and there is a lot of old Soviet and newer Russian stuff of interest there. I've also never had an issue with a virus, spyware or malware from them; that being said, Russia is the spyware capital of the world and anyone downloading from that site needs to keep that in mind. Now and then a friend who still works for my old agency will call and we will chat. He wrote computer code in the past, was a system administrator, and now does R&D analysis; he still follows these issues pretty closely. I get the (unclassified) scoop from him about the latest threats, etc from that part of the world. If you ever do download anything from there be doubly sure to scan it first with a trusted virus detection program, as well as malware/spyware detection. Good advice, I think, for any download unless you absolutely trust the site you got it from, but especially in this instance.

If you already do this, and you probably do, then I apologize for repeating. However, it might help someone new to this game or who hasn't downloaded from the Russian site before.

Have a good day all!

Very nice gift from Swingman! Only thing i had to do is little correction with contact points, its really very nice model.

When SWingaman sent me the Beta, he included "Feel free to share", in the e-mail, so I assume putting it up here would be OK by him.
My FS9 was jacked up, so I couldn't test it, or offer suggestions, but, I did do a quickie port to FSX.
It only needs minor instrument re-sizing and movement to display some of the gauges in FSX.
Anyhoo...It looks marvelous and flies pretty good too!
The only thing I've noted in the Beta is you need to use keystrokes rather than the mouse to manipulate the Mags.
[edit] I wasn't using the correct "drag" with the mouse. It's a little unintuitive but it does work.

I'm gonna grab the released version and port it too...Don

DEFINITELY a beautiful addition. I am so happy that Swingman did this one. :applause::applause::applause::applause:

Kikas, what corrections did you make to the contact points out of curiosity??

I had no idea what i was doing but after some messing i changed static_cg_height = to 5.200 i hope this will help

It was fun watching this bird come to life(via FB)and being involved in the beta testing.Swing is a true artist and all around great guy!:icon29:

Okay, that helped... a little.

I didn't notice the bouncing on my first flight, but it was there on my second flight. I modified the static_cg_height before the third flight, but am still getting some bouncing. Seems most of it is coming from the tailwheel.

Perhaps someone can take a closer look at the contact points and see if more can be done to smooth things out?

Thanks

I have no problems with contacts points and no bouncing (when parking or at take off and landing)
Original aircraft.cfg no modified
Aircraft realism set to full and FS2004 meshes installed are from Genesis and Scenery Tech

Thanks SS for the tip on the .rus site.

I also am a bit suspicious of Russian sites, but this one seems to be vetted by the number of members that download from this site.

Jag

This particular Russian site is a pretty solid site. Yes, there has been payware hosted to it...but they are very quick to remove those packages once a piracy claim is made....I found an Alphasim/Virtavia payware package on that site a year or so ago, notified the folks at Virtavia, they contacted the site....the package was taken down and the uploader was banned. This is the only Russian site I will download from.

Concerning the contact points.....when Swingman first sent me the beta package, the plane would bounce like a wild horse and nose over like a drunken sailor (no insult meant toward those members of SOH who were sailors, drunken or otherwise). I did what I could to get the plane to behave better on the ground.....I was not able to get it fully dialed in.....sorry about that.

Tim

I need to contact Swingman to see if there is any way he could add the ability to open the engine cowling....you all should see the Menasco engine he modeled for this plane...best looking engine I have seen modeled in a long time.

This is one sweet looking little plane. I have to wait til the weekend to DL and install (no classes on Friday) but it gives me a lot to look forward to!

For those that have trouble with Avsim.rus, SWingman himself uploaded it to the Flightsim Library...Don

"FS2004 1936 Ryan ST" 1936ryanst_fs9.zip

Just downloaded, thanks for the heads up, Tim.

Reading in the licensing, he says "Unlimited Distribution" so I would think that means permission is granted to upload.?
