On Sunday I assembled my new computer from the components my son sent me for Xmas. After several hours of bad language and speaker phone coaching I was ready to power it up and load Windows XP. Just had keyboard, mouse and monitor hooked up, nothing else. Powered up OK but couldn't install XP because the keyboard didn't work on start-up to press Enter to start the install. Keyboard is from my original Compaq with USB connection to the computer. My son suggested that I get a USB to PS/2 port adapter for the keyboard and see if it gets detected through the PS/2 port. Any suggestions or comments? This type of troubleshooting is my weak area since I haven't had too many serious problems with my old Compaq coal-burner.

Did you try the PS2 port? Without USB drivers, it may not be recognizing the USB ports.
 
Perhaps your BIOS isnt setup to recognize a USB keyboard (USB Keyboard support- enabled). Unfotunately you'll need a ps2 keyboard to make the BIOS change. Most newer motherboards natively support USB keyboards but it's got to be enabled in BIOS. Good luck on the adapter, never had much use for them as I never owned a USB keyboard (or mouse).
 
May just need to get a new keyboard, the keyboard you have may have firmware that is just too old.
I had some issues like that with an older Logitech force feedback USB wheel controller. Ended up having to get newer one. :kilroy:
 
Happens all the time...

As already stated...In bios enable keyboard support , and / or get a P2 cheapo at a thrift store for 4 bucks ...
 
You know what would be cool....

A new version of Windows XP.. Call it XP Gold...

It would be the same ole WinXP, but have new features like 'needed USB' drivers and things, and updates for other hardware that is used on a daily basis in the hardware sections.


I wish they had updated and improved XP rather then make vista, or perhaps make a seperate XP 'updated' model OS 'and' have vista... I think MS would have made alot more money that way and kept customers as well.

Oops.. more.. And why not come out with another version of FS9 using the FS2004 game engine but with improved scenery, autogen, and new planes!

Buy a new keyboard, they're cheap. Your old one is probably full of crumbs, dust and dead insects anyway !

Try a USB to PS/2 adapter. More'n likely it will work. Basically...AT, PS/2, and USB keyboards are all the same serial devices inside. Just have a different connector on the end of the cord.
If this is one of them fancy "multi-media" type keyboards with all sorts of extra buttons on it, the extra buttons likely won't work but the basic QWERTY keyboard functions will be functional.

Once there, check the BIOS settings for USB keyboard support. If the BIOS doesn't have it...then just keep using the PS/2 adapter.

Actually Bill...they've got it. XP Service Pack 3 :)
You've been playing around with them frooty computers too long! :d

Either slip-stream SP3 into your current XP disk & burn a new CD or request "replacement media" from Microsoft for a few bucks and use your current XP key. All the service pack goodies will be rolled in at the initial install.

This won't help in TARPS' case though since he's not able to get his keyboard working on the hardware level (to access the BIOS or to install any OS...Frooty, Birdy, or Billy :) ).

Hmmm...don't tell that to my old 1992 vintage Laser AT keyboard!
It's still built with the good old Cherry brand micro-mini keyswitches (none of that rubber membrane switch stuff) and has that good old click-clack tactile feedback.

It has outlasted four of those rubber membrane type keyboards and still gets used daily on my Linux "clunker" rig (jokingly referred to as "the porn-surfing computer" LOL)!
 
Thanks for the feedback everybody. :) Got a new PS/2 keyboard this afternoon, gonna use that to (hopefully) get the new pooter loaded with XP. Mike's moved the thread to the Toy Box forum so I will let you know what success I have when I get back to it tonight.

They should also come out with 8-track gold editions...all modern hits on outdated, analogue garbage! CD's and MP3's are so worthless...who wants to buy a whole new player just to listen to modern songs??? [/sarcasm]:wiggle:
