Central School in Harvard, Illinois (where I grew up) is finally closing her doors to school children. I started school there kindergarten through second grade. My parents went there as well as my Grandpa Jones. It was a high school when he went though. Believed to be the longest continuously operating school in Illinois. They certainly don't build them like this anymore. I am going to have to see if I can get one last look inside next time I am up that way. It has been decades.

I faced this defining moment in life several years back when I was on leave in Rocky Mount, NC. I normally made a trip to my old high school where I graduated from in 1981. It's only 10 minutes north in Whitakers, NC. Imagine my eternal shock when I arrived that final year and saw the main building was demolished and the vastly smaller part of the school was closed due to depravation of funds!

Enfield Academy is no more.

I was in my early 40's when that happened and it was a shock. It's the knowledge that a part of your childhood died -- a structure, but moreover memories that no longer have a tangible form that you could walk through the hallways and experience the memories connected with the physical reminders.

I took a small chip of brick and mortar from what was left of a corner foundation. I still have it in my office and can see it as I type this. I have two such stones on that shelf. One is that chip of brick. The other is a fist-sized white rock taken from Afghanistan from the first year of the war. Worthless, but filled with priceless memories.

I always find it so sad when such wonderful landmarks are closed. Yes, I know that "time marches on", but it still saddens me.

Not far from me is a beautiful building that was originally Kimsey Junior College in Ducktown, TN. Built in 1932, it was renovated in 1978, and was used as the Ducktown Elementary School until sometime a few years ago.

That is one beautiful building in your pics. I hope some good use is found for the building and that it is not torn down to make room for another soulless Walmart or strip mall.

I can guarantee this; if a Wal Mart is ever built near Ducktown, TN, then our economy will have truly recovered, because 'round here - the only shopping choices available are a Dollar General and a Piggly Wiggly (also known as the Hoggly Woggly)!!
