Hi

While I was going though some other stuff within VISTA
I noticed that somewhere I have lost a lot of disk space and I could not figure out where it all went.
So I downloaded a little utility to see what was going on and found that the "system volume information" was taking up 80 GB!!! for what I beleive is for disk recovery. What is VISTA up too?
Anyway I found this SITE and recovered 75GB! I realise that this will compremise any real restoring, but I have backups on other Harddrives.
So if you decide to do this, it's at your own risk!

I'm really new to VISTA and have to learn alot. :Banane37: :isadizzy:

With a default Vista64, my "Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space" is 10.254GB, allocated 3.133GB and used 2.884GB.

Intresting and very good to know...I used Vista very briefly before sending it my wifes way...But I never noticed this strangeness...

Thanks for sharing the info and fix for this...

Despite disabling User account control, I still have fits trying (sometimes it doesn't work) to take ownership of MY files so I can do anything with them. For a single user computer all this stuff is insane!

When I used Vista for FSX I did the install different to avoid that issue...

Instead of the default location install in a program file location, I made a new folder and called it FSX and put it outside of both program files locations and then browsed the FSX install to it..After that most addons found it automatically ,only a few needed browsed to it...:wavey:

That keeps Vista from taking ownership of the files....

I have a labotomised Vista on my main Fs machine and XPSP3 on my backup rig. In a bootup contest My Vista machine wins by nearly a minute. Once I learned how to do a "Hal" on Vista it runs as sweetly as I need.

Hey Roger

What is "Hal"? I've pritty much got my VISTA to run well enough for me to be happy with it, but if I can do more I'll be even happier.

Thanks

Bennie

Hal is the computer from 2001 space oddesy movie days....

My XPPro SP 3 boots in like 40 seconds......

Yup...Black Viper is the industry standard as far as what does what and is safe to shut down.....

Its great for older systems, with low CPU specs, but I find that its does not so much for higher end specs running dual and quad cores...But its always good to kill what you don't need....

Ken Salter has a great program for that too, that will shutdown all services not needed and launch your game or sim and then restart it all when you exit the game..It also like Viper will show you what each service and program does and if its safe to shut down and restart...I use it on ocassion...

http://alacritypc.kensalter.com/ Make sure to follow his quick start guide for ease and suscess..Plus I understand the program and how it works believe it or not.....LOL

To take full control over any file in vista "WITH or WITHOUT" turning UAC off:
Right click the file, click Properties, click on Security tab, click on Edit tab, A new window will open, highlight Users(YOUR NAME-PC\Users), Now in the Permissions for Users box put a check in Full Control "Allow", click Apply, and OK to close. Now you'll have full control over that type file.

Some things to know is that Restore will eat up hd/d space, turning it off (if you can live without it) will cure that. Another thing is everytime you install updates to vista it creates backup files (not just in Restore) the same goes for SP1 or if your using the beta of sp2. I use Tuneup Utilities 2009 which has a nice little utility to delete these backups and freeup the hd/d space. You can get it here: http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/ It has a 30 day trial.
