RA-5C Vigilante AS FSX Native

It's an MDLX conversion - haven't tried it out, but it does enable you to merge a better looking (though not accurate) VC to what has to be one of my most long lived frequent flyers.

NB: "LLS" has a few other military FSX conversions over at simviation.

North American (Alphasim) RA-5C X Package

It's old, but so pretty...FSX native conversion, full original Alphasim Vigilante with VC. All functions and animations correct in sense and direction, per original FS2004 release. Conversion facilitated by a terrific set of freeware tools; Arno's MDLX with a breakthrough set of new XML definitions by Henk-BRAVO ZULU! Textures in DDS DXT3 format with Martin Wright's DXTBMP, file structure in FSX format. Skullsweat and conversion by LLS. While the model comes in a bit heavier, the frames are buttery, the glass is c'est bon. Note: The VC was pretty badly out of date, so I alised Piglet's T-2 cockpit- you must have the T-2 installed. Base package for effects is Bob Chilco's A-5 updates. The repaints by Antonio Diaz for this model are highly recommended. Made possible with the kind support and encouragement of Phil at Virtavia. http://www.virtavia.com

I tried some of the other conversions and found them a mixed bag honestly. The skyknight is quite nice, but the tupolev has non reflective textures and the avro has the stuck afterburner problem usually found in port overs. Haven't tried the vigilante yet though.

I plead pure laziness...I think the stuck AB is a gauge thing-ten ton finger on F1, I'm happy. The A-5 doesn't do that, for instance. I looked at all the reflective-bumps-specs...thinks, if somebody wants 'em, that can all be done now quite easily. I also typo'd the A-5-the cockpit is aliased to Piglet's F-1, not the T-2, most folks should figure that fumducker out. All those blows to the head must have a cumulative effect, but the flight surgeon keeps ignoring the brain tumour and signing off my medical, so I'm not going to worry too much. :very_drunk:
Time economy, too. I't takes much longer to chase down unfeatures than the conversion process takes, and I find doodling half arsed crap toys and fiddling with models more fun than running the sim, so I lazy-out and put the limited time budget into attacking that end of it, like, converting propellers to fsx...that far away. Then we'll be getting somewhere. Like some Seafires or something...

Anyone have a link to Piglet's F-1 FSX?[/COLOR]

It's available here http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?catid=38&sort=d&page=2&pp=20

If the link doesn't work, go to Add-ons Library/FSX Aircraft/FSX Military Jets - page 2

It's a really impressive vc if not strictly kosher. I'm going to try it with my own aircraft.cfg and paints tomorrow if time and RW permit. And many thanks go to Lazarus for raising another rare and beautiful AS model from the dead!

Brings back many memories...
I was in RVAH-9 jet shop from 1971-1974,I was an ADJ 2

The Forrestal did not like the 4 Vigilantes cluttering the deck so when we were in the Eastern Med,we had a detachment in Suda Bay Crete!
We also had a detachment in Rota, Spain-Spent time at all three locations in that 72-73 cruise, almost 10 months long!

Worked the line and IMA shop for a year in Albany Ga.
In January of 1974, they closed down Albany and moved us to NAS Key West Florida

And finally, I met and married a WAVE and 42 years later we are still together! And my Chief said it would never last LOL

F1 VC merge is a great idea Laz! Working well. Just need to sort out the VC lighting .. Thanks so much for the package.

Yes, I spliced the new model and vc entries into my existing air.cfg and paints - using Don B's great 2D panel mods and pop ups. Working well!

The Vigilante's design was ahead of its time. In my opinion, it was the most beautiful aircraft the USN has ever had in its inventory. It was beauty in flight. Maintenance nightmare, as I recall, however. NC

Are you sure????

Neither of those URLs work... the simviation one goes to a zip file description... but can't find the download anywhere... Page 2 HERE is also a NO SHOW!!!

G.

PS: MY MISTAKE! I FINALLY FOUND IT IN SIMVIATION... not in SOH page 2 thought...

I get a black VC with no transparency?

:dizzy:

Cees

Never mind, fixed it. I'm new to this, so I forgot to put the textures of the F-1 that are needed in the shared texture map.

How do I get the afterburner to show up otherwise than by putting on the light?:dizzy:

There's a line in the original panel calling for an XML gauge; 'gauge**=PhantomGaugesDCBV5!F4 Afterburner Follower, 40,0,20,20' which needs adding as a new line to the panel.cfg file under [vcockpit1]. It determines the behaviour of the burners. I also copied the .cab file 'PhantomGaugesDCBV5' from the original panel folder to the new panel folder and it works.

There is also an engine running follower line as well - 'gauge**=RA-5C!RA5C Engine running follower, 60,0,20,20'. For that there is another gauge folder 'RA-5C' and I added this line and the folder in as well. Hope this helps.

Now things are cooking! I had set up the texture configs to point to the F-1 textures, I've been trying to keep duplication down as textures are the ones that take up HD space. Hoping a graphics artist takes up the cause and we get some bump maps and whatnot.
Nice screens! You think of the age of this model, she looks pretty good.
I have found some factory models of version floated to the RAAF, interesting. I thought the coolest hack NAA floated was the Retaliator.
So, if I put a rocket engine in the tunnel, would any body be interested in the rocket boosted(easier hack than the 3xJ-79 version) Retaliatior?

As always I just added my usual Thud burner effects to this and all was well. I did a 2D cockpit to match the F-1 VC so adding both to it was a done deal...canopy animation...mirrors...stick, etc.

Specs and bumps would help things...and the current images are quite ordinary res [and quaintly mirrored]. We'd need to know what suitable namings were coded for the spec and bump for the FSX model for them to be added...;)

What me 2D looks like....
