Not sure if it's for real or they have been hacked. The English grammar/spelling on that notice is very poor so my guess it was either a kiddie hack or it was written very quickly in anger and not spell checked.

The notice there now looks slightly different to when I first looked at it. I suspect it has been edited.

Jesus. Have some personal responsibility for crying out loud. Forced them to close? Because of criticism? No one forced them to do a damned thing. Sounds more like an overwhelming sense of insecurity and low self-worth is what caused the closure if anything. If you can't take critique you're in the wrong business, freeware or otherwise.

I really hope this is some sort of hack, otherwise it's just shameless, insecure attention-whoring at it's worst. Maybe someone can bake them some cookies and rub their head or something.

No you're wrong, in fact very wrong!
UKMIL is just another freeware site to close on a bad note and Mike Stone giving up due to crits was another.
I absolutely abhor the tossing armchair "critics" who have no idea of the stress and strain on creative personalities (usually fragile if they're any good).
I take your post here in very bad light and would class you as one of the thick skinned prats who cause this sort of reaction!

MTFU, as we say round my way. Considering the main man at UKMil is serving RAF if he can't take a bit of criticism he's probably in the wrong job.
 
I don't think it's really a matter of how tough you are in taking criticism, you just get to the point where you need to move on and say f*ck it.

I am creative for a living (and have been for a long long time), and have learned over the years to take criticism in stride. Anyone can visit my site (second link in my sig) and critique my work as much as they like, here or anywhere. If I decide to agree with them or get discouraged and close down, that's my fault not theirs. You're right in that I may not know all the particulars of this specific case, but based on the grandiose farewell note it certainly appears that community crit "forced" the closure... it even says as much. As a professional creative type myself, that comes off as rather weak.

I'm sorry you took my post in a bad light, no offense intended of course. If this is as it appears, then it just bothers me that any creative person would fold up shop and blame others for their own lack of self esteem.

Again, if I'm totally wrong on this for lack of a deeper understanding of this particular circumstance... my apologies and nothing personal.

People have the "right" to complain regardless of whether it is free or not. Whether it is morally right or not is still up for debate. You guys certainly didn't hold yourselves back when it came to other companies' works, especially British ones (but you too had the right to complain).


In the end it IS your choice to close. You're probably disappointing more people by closing than continuing to operate. Especially those who pay/paid for your freeware and beta testing...

We don't have enough flight sim developers as it is (especially freeware) so in that way it is sad to see them take this decision. However, I must admit that I don't have a single item of theirs in my hangar. That's not to say I never tried any. I installed lots of UKMIL stuff, flew it once and took it off again. For some reason their aircraft just didn't do anything for me and left me 'cold'. I had an issue with a lot of their paints and didn't like the techniques they used or the way they displayed certain items but that was just my opinion and for the most part I kept it to myself and simply deleted the aircraft.

As an aside I am NOT a "FS ARMCHAIR CRITIC WHO CANNOT EVEN BUILD A PEA" as I am able to both model and paint and have been praised for my output and therefore consider that I have the skills to tell a good object from a bad one.

I was trying to avoid this thread, but it keeps coming, so i´ll post my opinion, it´s mine and should not be taken as an attack to UKMIL.
Now..
If there is something i´ve learned during this 5 yrs in this biz is that you have to learn to listen and understand your public/customers..ie..have a THICK skin.It really don´t matter if you spend 18hrs a day developing a wing,it doesn´t matter at the end, what matters is the fact that you´re trying to replicate an existing aircraft as accurately as you can BUT it´s extremelly complicated to do, and for some, small differences can make upset fans.
My suggestion: If you´re into this, either for free or comercially, dump the dumb idea that everyone is going to praise your work, LEARN from what they have to say,and listen, listen, listen....
As for the UKMIL guys, well, thanks for what you´ve done, at least for me, you covered my needs, too bad you decided to jump down of the wagon, and good luck on your new endevours.

I dont get the reason behinde the site closing..Criticism ? Ok, if that,s the reason why the potential reopening after september 09 ? Makes no sense . It,s a bit a melodramatic farewell , but i wish UKMIL all the best !

As a former member of ukmil a can confirm the site has shut down, unknown if it's permanent or temporary though? Myself and 2 other scenery designers announced this morning we where leaving to try something new it seems that was the final straw from Dave the guy who runs the site? read down this thread at UKAR, my post is at the bottom which explains quite a lot.

Nobody likes to have a free gift picked apart and criticised, but that certainly doesn't stop a lot of folks from doing it. I can sympathize with their frustration. What I don't agree with - at all - is this myth that creative personalities are somehow fragile or thin-skinned. It takes balls to keep putting your work out there day in and day out, knowing that some numbnuts is going to trash it in order to make himself feel better.

Not saying that UKMIL was justified, but I'm heartily refuting the idea that to be creative is to be somehow weak.
