John Travolta uses his 707 for Haiti relief

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
Have ya'll seen the news snippets about John Travolta flying his Boeing 707 to Haiti to deliver tons of MRE (Meals Ready to Eat), medical teams and Scientology ministers (No Religious Comments Please). He stated that he felt that since he had the plane, the means to use it, that he had an obligation to use the plane to get much needed food and supplied into Haiti. He also used the plane to fly supplies into areas hit by Hurricane Katrina.

Way to go John!

I have always thought of him as a great humanatarian personally. :applause:

Thanks for the HU now I will search the nwes for more ...!

After the personal tragedy he and his family suffered last year, it's nice to see him doing this.

If I had my own Boeing, not only would I wear the stripes, I'd have the young women wear the whole stewardess uniform. OH and not the current pants/vest uniform..oh no..the old 60's-70's mini skirt ;)

Good on him, but it's a shame he wears his captain's stripes when he's doing it.

Its his plane, its his license, I reckon he can do anything he wants to when he flies it ... last I knew, the clothes the man/woman wore who fly aircraft for a living really didn't matter to the actual control of the aircraft's operation.

Kinda like that tossle you got from your high school graduation that you hung from the mirror of your car ... secretly it gave your car 15 percent more horsepower. Riiiiiight!

I don't think much of Travolta as an actor, I grew up with him being Vinnie and never cared much for the character ... unfortunately that dislike stuck with him in other roles he's had.

As a person, if he has the means and the wearwithal to provide this assistance then more power to him. Its a hell of a lot more than I see some others doing.

Because he holds a PPL. He's got the ratings on his aircraft (limited to SIC on the 707), but it's still a PPL.

Heck, if he wants to dress up in a Tie Fighter pilot or Storm Trooper uniform/suit, thats fine by me... (but not Vader.. that just wouldnt be right...)

I like the idea of the ladies in their appropriate uniforms also. :d (Do they need a stewardess rating to wear those?)

So neither of you mind when people walk around in military uniform with badges they've bought off ebay, claiming to have gone to war?

You earn your stripes.

Ummm No, that's a completely different thing.

As I said, by rights, its his aircraft, he flys it, he can be the captain of if he wants. What do I care. He's not claiming any military fame that I know of from sportin the outfit.

He's an actor for god's sake, let him have his little fantasy. Sheeze. :isadizzy:

In what way is it a completely different thing?

Edit: And he can't be captain on the 707 at all. He's limited to second in command.

... claiming to have gone to war? ...

He hasn't made the claim, so far as I know. So its all harmless fun on his part. (it goes well with his hollywood mental image of himself, swollen head and all.)

Didn't you wear a solider uniform as a child while playing at war and claim to be a war hero, or a great leader of armies? Its no different than child's play for him. Its no different than a freaking halloween costume.

Get over it.

As for all those idiots who buy the stuff on e-bay and make claims then they are the true liars and they know it, and they should suffer whatever consequences they suffer.

Umm, I admit, I wore a pirate outfit in October. No judgements please ;)

In that case, I will sit on my hands.:kilroy:

But only after this;

A new B-17 crew about to go on their first bomb run.

Pilot- "Keep the chatting to a minimum on com, and no politics, no religion, no women, understood?"

Right waist gunner- "Why no politics, skipper?"

Pilot- "Because, believe it or not, we're not all sharing your political views!"

Tail gunner- "And how about religion?"

Pilot- "Because, believe it or not, we're not all sharing your religious beliefs!"

Ball turret gunner- "OK then... but why not women?"

Pilot- "Because, believe it or not, we're all sharing yours!!!"

Have a nice day:wavey:

Good for Travolta. And besides being a all round good guy and one hell of a pilot, he's a dam good humanitarian too.

To TheOptomist..... as "Pilot In Command" he has the right to wear Captains bars, and besides that he owns the 707. His copilot probably wears 2nd Officer bars cause John says he can. If he can't wear them, according to you, then any airline pilot out there hasn't the right to wear theirs. Tell all of them that if you dare...face to face. Then look up at them from the floor. All of them laughing at you all at once will probably knock ya on yer kester.

Although I understand the point TheOptimist is making - Travolta owns the plane and it's use is private - not commercial. He is not purporting to be a commercial airline capitan, nor has he ever. If he were, it would justify your point.

On his private plane, as others have said, he can wear anything he wants. (IMHO)

Time out everyone. :isadizzy:
I guess some of us forgot about this....

About 8 years ago, in 2002, Mr. Travolta became the "Global Goodwill Ambassador" for Qantas.
He even went as far as to get his First Officer certificate for a 747, and eventually flew a few routes across the Pacific.
He was presented with wings and stripes by the Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon, as he was in fact employed by Qantas to do the multiple city tour.
The 707 Mr. Travolta owns is a former Qantas bird.
That 707 was repainted in Qantas livery, and Mr. Travolta was Pilot In Command for the entire 13 city tour, at various stops around the world.
At the time in 2002, Mr. Travolta had in excess of 5000 hours, both personal and professional flying time.
Mr. Travolta continues to own and fly his 707 to this day.

Oh and he got his license in 1974, using every dime he made to get his commercial rating.
In the lean times between acting jobs, he would be PIC on a private jet for charter jobs.

So, Mr. Travolta has earned his stripes. 'Nuff said. :salute:
