Killer Whale kills at Sea World

A zoo is a zoo is a zoo- bottom line, they keep wild animals in captivity for the enjoyment of spectators/visitors.

The thing is how the animals are treated.

If you treat them like animals and give them some room for personal enjoyment, okay. But if you try to turn them into pets...good luck with that.

What part of Killer in Killer Whale did the not understand? It named a f:censored:ing Killer Whale. The name says it all.

Definitely a tragedy on several levels. Shame the gal lost her life...but she knew the risks, just like Dale Earnhardt knew the risks when he climbed into #3 that last time.

After reading the article, I am eye balling my 30 gallon fish tank with trepidation. Not worried about the Giant Danios, but that female Convict Cichlid, Mrs. Mean, earned her name for a reason. Not sure I have the courage to stick my hands in the tank to clean it tonight.

I keep my Labrador Retriever in a full acre of fenced in backyard. Does that make me a jail keeper?
If you kept a wolf fenced in, yes you'd be a jail keeper. The lab is more comparable to a gold fish in regards to the killer whale story. The lab is multiple generations removed from it's wolvish ancestors, and has been bred to co-habit with human society.

The killer whale has had no such benefit, no such purposeful breeding for a few thousand years. It's a wild predator that has been fenced in. It's a blunt testimoney to the amazing range of learning skills these creatures possess, that the unfortunate incident at Sea World hasn't happened a lot more frequently.

A large animal that likes to roam wide ranges should not be kept in a confined area.

As a horseman, I could really take issue with this, but in the interests of a friendly, family type forum, I'll behave.

THE KILLING ANIMAL

:greenbo:
The most dangerous animal is the human being, destroying is environment for profit or pleasure, making animal species more and more rare, cutting the tree where he is sitting on, just see little exemples in the line below :

:jeep0a: :hatchet: :tgun2: :banghead: :violent: :rocket: :toilet: :jeep0a:

I'm dangerous for myself and I'm upset so many times, but in this Forum I'm nicely surprised of the number of people that share my toughts. Sorry for that girl she touches nature in his full wildness, she payed the hard price. Was it a good job ? showing animals like this, is it a way to make them love by a large number of persons, by sacrifying the freedom of a few ?

Thank Cloud9Gal you apreciate my photos,I really like what you wrote :applause:.

I'm refering to elephants, giraffes, tigers, polar bears, orcas, gorillas, etc. A zoo is a zoo is a zoo- bottom line, they keep wild animals in captivity for the enjoyment of spectators/visitors.

I don't know about US zoo's, but the European zoo's are vital in conserving various species by setting up breeding programs etc.
Some tiger and lion subspecies would be extinct if it wasn't for the population in the zoo.

I Like zoo's can't go to many, They Keep trying to put me in a cage??
I do understand that zoo's do a great service to help out in breeding animals and helping understand the needs of many WILD animals.
But I am troubled when people try to interact with dangerous animals (Like Snuffy)..
It is very troubling that another Human has died for this interaction..
God Bless this poor soul.

And if they would Stop trying to Put me is cages I believe I would go more often..

What really annoys me about this is when an animal attacks someone in a zoo - then they shoot the animal. What a waste of a beautiful animal, and for God's sake what does one expect when it is kept in a 30 metre long-tank!!! The same thing happened at Marwell Zoo about five years ago, when a tiger killed someone, the keepers just went in with a rifle and shot it.

When taking C9G on a date, don't mention going to the zoo! ....

:icon_lol:

No kidding! :engel016:

Of course there was a second half to my point. Not all wild animals consider a zoo a bad place to live. The situation depends both on the animal and the zoo.

Cheers,

Ken

No need to disagree. I think we both agree fully. The cattle and horses I see out here in Portales, NM look very happy. I see nothing wrong with keeping them in a pasture. In fact, that's sort of the point I was trying to make.

Cheers,

Ken

Or perhaps they keep animals in a controlled environment where people can both appreciate them, promote their preservation, and learn more about them in a scientific environment. The lessons so learned can (and have been) applied to improving their natural conditions to promote the success of the species.

I personally find nothing at all evil in people wanting to go to a zoo to see animals. Not everyone is blessed with enough money and time to travel the world over on safaris. I certainly think you have every right to your view and also personally to avoid visiting them. But I also think people aren't contributing to a nefarious plot against the animal kingdom by visiting, building, or staffing zoos.

Cheers,

Ken

Same here. No difference. :engel016:

> How can you judge how content an animal is with it's living conditions based on its looks? Bottom line is that animals were not made to live in concrete enclosures on a diet of antibiotics.

IMHO,
SOH is a zoo.....:d

no doubt!

While I agree that many zoos promote research and conservation of animals. The sad fact is that within my children's lifetimes and certainly my grandchildren's lifetimes, many animals will exist only in zoos. As humanity's voracious appetite for land and resources continues to devour the natural habituates of many animals, the zoos or prisons, as C9Gal refers to them, will be their only existence.

There is a great truism, in my opinion, which states you can judge the character of a person by how they treat those whom can't hurt them. In this regard, I feel, we humans will have a lot to answer for to God. Let's face it, the research done in zoos is secondary to the arrogance of humans. Only humans will in imprison another species solely for their own selfish satisfaction. The fact is the animals in zoos are put on display for the enjoyment of the human audience. Gary Larson's Far Side cartoons showed this succinctly in his cartoons of humans looking out at the world beyond in alien zoos.

While I do not share C9Gals strong feelings against zoos, I recognize them and admire her for her stand. While, I think zoos are an evil necessity, I believe we should not fool ourselves to the Machiavellian and pecuniary nature of zoos. They make money for the owners by putting on display creatures who have no control over their own lives. They also do it as cheaply as possible.

I have visited over a dozen zoos in my lifetime. I found that in many, the large apes and cats are cooped up in small quarters and do not seem to be happy animals. Large cats that pace back and forth over and over or apes who seem to contemplate their own drool do not seem happy to me. These look to me to be the actions of neurotic animals. Then, I am not a zoologist so I could be wrong.

Just my two-bits.

When taking Ken Stallings on a date, GO TO A ZOO!

Ha! Shows what you know! Any woman after my heart has to get through my wife first, and then if alive, needs to take me to an airport. Having an airplane to fly is another step in the right direction! :engel016:

being a HUGE animal lover, i have a 50/50 hate/love thing for zoos.

Over-all, i think most zoos try their best to keep the animals happy. And by exposing animals to the young kids, it can help spread the message of conservation. My parents took me to many zoos when i was young (including Sea World), and that had a huge impact on me in coming an animal lover.

However, i don't like "animal shows" at all. Zoos do these because it can generate money and ticket sales, but it's really not right to make animals do "people" things. I never watch shows at zoos...because i can't stand seeing a sea-lion shaking hands or a bunch of killer whales jump through hoops. The zoos usually justify these acts as "animals do these things in the wild too!" Oh really? I didn't know Killer Whales like to jump through naturally occuring hoops in the wild!

Anyways, like the previous posts stated, a lot of animals won't be around anymore...and the zoo will be the only place to see them. It's sad, but that's reality.

I was just doing some hard-core back-packing in the jungles of Malaysia last week. We got lucky and saw fresh tiger prints (very cool to see). However, we hiked to a local resturant on the outskirts of the jungle, and on their menu was "tiger meat"..... these animals will all be gone in the next 10-20 years....
