The 2010 Sim-Outhouse Panther Award Contest

PRB

Administrator
Staff member
Those of you who have been around the Sim-Outhouse for some time will remember that the word “Panther” became a verb around here, as in “I Panthered again”. It means to “crash in spectacular fashion”, and was named after our esteemed administrator of the same name, because he did it so often, and posted great screen shots to prove it. In that spirit, and thanks to jmig for the idea, we will hold a contest for the best “Panther!” Post pictures and write ups of your most creative/stupid crashes. The write up creativity will be a factor in determining the winner! At the end of the year the SOH Staff will nominate candidates for the award. The winners will get a prize, which is still TBA. Good luck (I think!) :icon_lol:

Ha ha,
Great idea Paul and John!
Just remember though to be genine " Full on Pantherization" there must be flames...just smoke no go:d

Even better with lots of debris flying around too. Never figured out how he did that.:wiggle:

Hi everybody,
I will not partecipate to the contest, but I'd like to know what happen to the real Panther: not seen him anymore in here (I must have been away too long)

How on earth has he posted crash screenshots?

Mr. P has been very involved with his outside work. He is still around. Go to the Photography forum and you will see some of his work.

It's possible to "capture the moment", as it were... Some of the effects depend on the model, of course, and sometimes you can hit replay quickly, before the sim resets (as I did here), and relive your wonderful moment. This picture was taken during the Sim-Outhouse MacRoberson Air Race Event, held in 2007. This is the MAAM R4D, and this picture shows what happens when you make a perfect landing in all respects except for the step in the checklist about putting the landing gear down...

"No!! Don't touch that...." ~Boooooom!!!~

Useta-could fly through there in the T-38 in FS8. Suddenly in ACOF it was no longer possible with crash realism on.
It caught fire right after this but didn't grab the shot, as this one was better. Nav lights are still in position, heh! Replay rocks!

Someone actually did that in real life without damaging the plane! As I recall it was a US Navy pilot and he suffered a gear failure during a post maintenance test flight or some such. Anyway he set himself up on finals and shut down both engines, then he used the starter to motor them round so that one blade was at the 12 o'clock position and the other two were at 4 and 8, as the main wheels on the DC-3 still stick out the bottom of the gear bay when fully retracted he was then able to land without a scratch. The rescue crew basically turned up, jacked the thing up and let the gear down before towing it to the hangar!
I did try it in FS2004 once but the crash detection seemed to treat the prop disc as a crash box even when it's stopped...

I think you win boxcar with that one! :pop4:

Nah, just trying to set the bar high out of the gate, is all.
Besides, as Roger aptly notes, to be "Full on Pantherization" there needs to be flames!

Symbolic crash & burn?

Wriggley Field... what I miss the most about Chicago along with those wonderful downtown cafeterias & museums.

Air race practice gone bad

It was possible to fly through the Sears Towers antenna masts with crash detect on
though not so the John Hancock building as we used to do in prior FS editions.

After that it was through the Sears antennas & close around the John Hancock's.

Let's see some of those saved-for-posterity Panther gems from the past!

Guess I am going to have to get my ships with damage models going... me thinks there will be plenty of carrier shots.:wavey:

Boxcar~ Your first picture was awesome! It's almost like the whole plane just pulverized!

Who will be next to "Panther"??

There is Panther... then there is everyone else. Over the years I have laughed my head off! :icon_lol:

Well, if it comes down to crash and burn, boxcar is in another league! LOL

But I think to be a true Panther, one must be landing. There must be fire and there must be smoke, damage is optional. :icon_lol:

This thread is too depressing -- all those beautiful airplanes being abused! :icon_lol:
