I've reached the end of my rope...

Hey guys,

I'm not going to mess around with my PC any more. As soon as I get the chance, I'm going to buy a new, clean internal hard drive and burn the one in my desktop at the stake while doing cartwheels and cheering. I've done at least seven complete system re-formats/reboots in the last several months, and the problem keeps getting worse. I can't keep doing this, I'll go insane. I can't work on CFS2 with having to reformat my hard drive at least once a week.

So.....we'll just give it a real clean slate and go from there. I still have my laptop to check on things, so I'm not worried about missing anything here in the forum. Even trying to restore from a "clean" system checkpoint didn't work. So...screw it. :rocket: :a1451: :banghead:

Frick It

Hey Rami, I feel your pain. I had a series of similar disasters.
One thing I found on my system...if you go to my computer...right click on the suspect HDD...then tools...check for errors. It runs a diagnostic at the next reboot.
After that has finished, providing you can still get into your OS, go to Administrative tools...event viewer...system.

Bad blocks will be shown here is the HDD is funky.
They will only show after running the chkdisk from administrative tools. :icon33:

Rami!

I'm NOT by any way, shape or form, a computer savy guru (ask BC) ... that said ... with what you are describing reminds me of something I learned tha hard way.

When your computer starts doing what IT wants to while you're just working it ... minding your own business ... IT'S ABOUT TO CRAP ALL OVER YOU WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT!.

It's easy to spend other people's money ... but I think you're getting ahead of the wave on this one and THAT'S A GOOD THING! ( I also do NOT try to get the last mile out of my tires either. I got that out of my system at 18 years of age, on a rainy night, miles from home, one a curve, on a hill, in the middle of NOWHERE!) Save up, buy a new HD and beat the "sum bitch" at it's own game ... then YOU get to laugh at the computer ... not the other way 'round!

From the really odd section...

System restore actually worked. once I shut down the PC. :jawdrop: My system is back to the "ultra clean" restore point I made twelve hours ago. However, I still don't trust it. I'll use my laptop tomorrow to talk to Dirty and Geary, if they're around.

I have the viruses locked up in the vault, as well as a detailed history of what and where these attacks occurred. I'm still getting a new hard drive anyway, but I'll keep her off the internet until I figure all of this out. At least I can work on CFS2 uninterrupted in the meantime. It's a good thing, I really need to blow some s**t up tonight.

If you haven't already, invest in a decent external HD and some freeware back up software, too- I use SyncBack myself.

Don't know what you run for security software- I know lots of folks swear that the tried and true payware stuff is a rip. But, I have always used a combination of Norton and Webroot real time and they have always done a superlative job. I keep others on hand: Lavasofts Ad-Aware, SpyBot Search and Destroy, Hijack This, MalwareBytes - Anti-Malware and Windows Defender. These last I turn on when the mood strikes me and I want to check something out. I also keep another nice diagnostic program on the computer named jv16 PowerTools.

Good luck and have fun!

MaskRider,

I have a 1TB Seagate external. I have three full copies of CFS2 files: one on my laptop, one on my Seagate, and one on my desktop. These include the actual installations, the centralized scenery, sound, model, and panel files, and the other the utilities that I use. No problem there.

For anti-virus/spyware, I have AVG 8.5 Professional, Spybot, and SpywareBlaster.

I gotcha Rami, Computer can be a pain in the neck sometimes. I'm thinkin I'm going to need a new HDD soon my self....

Rami, I run the AVG antivirus on my system, and the version I have (albeit the free one, not the pro) is already 9.0.800. Yours may be outdated.

I am opening a new secret account, for computer gear. Sooner or later, I know I will fling something out the window! How did this thing take over my life? Good luck, Rami.:salute::ernae:

Rams, My nephew, a guy that makes his living, and a good one at that, doing computers for big corporations, says that you need to format C about once a year, every year. It is like an oil and sparkplug change for you car.

He recommends changing the size of your partitions each time to reconfigure how your system uses the space.

So, save your stuff, not backup, to an external, reformat your original, install your new HD and load the OS on it. Then partition you old in a different configuration before you put anything back on it.

There must still be bugs in the system, because I'm getting tracking cookie warnings even when I'm not using Firefox or IE 8, and it looks like my attempt at lubricating the fan chassis didn't work either, because the noise is back, and is actually a little worse than yesterday.

My laptop is still running just fine, and I have CFS2 loaded on it, so I can still work...sigh.

When I run a search from Comcast.net on my laptop, I'm not getting any of the bad re-directs that I get running the same search on my desktop, so obviously there are still some bugs in the system.

Rami if you are using comcast for your internet, Mcafee was replaced by norton 360. I can report that the norton product seems to be a generation ahead of what norton was. I dumped avg and my registry cleaner after switching to norton. Rami if you do have comcast internet I would give the new norton a try it is free to comcast customers.

Olaf,

I don't like web-based anti-virus protection. l like standalone software.
