Anyone have Wings Over Vietnam?

I was digging around on the net, looking at pics of various F-4s and came across a site with lots of planes for WOV. A place called Column5. Some pretty nice looking models on the site....and then I remembered that I have WOV. Bought it and a Vietnam era shooter at a local discount store as a combo pack for $1. The shooter is pretty horrid...hadn't even installed WOV before. I installed it to check it out.

The graphics are not all that great, but not all that bad. I need to spend some time learning all the commands...wish there was a manual to read (just found the manual!).

Anyone run Wings Over Vietnam and have any pointers?

I have both versions of WoV, using SF2 version at the moment. First, go to the Thirdwire site and get the latest 2008 patch, its the latest and only patch you need.

Then, head over to Combatace and register, its free BTW. They have the largest and newest addons for this series. Once you get setup there, go here to the Knowledge Base for this series, it will answer a lot of your questions, from getting started, adding in all sorts of addons, etc.

Both Guns and Weapons Editers, get the most recent ones from the Thirdwire site, use the link I provided, make sure they are for the original SF series.

Project Widesky is a must have- it will give you much better clouds then the stock ones.

A lot of aircraft that you add in, need certain weapons. Can be a hassle downloading individual packs, so get this one, has just about everything in it!

As you know, reading the Readme files is important, because if you go into certain forums about this series and ask a noobish question , you can get jumped on pretty hard,lol Most folks using this series are pretty good to deal with, but a few can be PITA's! But, most forums are like that.

Read all you can in the Knowledge Base, there are so many things to understand, but once you get the hang of adding things in, it becomes second nature, and isn't very hard at all.
 
Went to the Third Wire site, found some updates and patches for Wings Over Vietnam that really dressed this combat sim up nicely. Added planes, enhanced the graphics by 200% at least.

I flew a couple missions last night. The first one was an A-4 strike against the power plant in downtown Hanoi. I was lead A-4, with three wing men. Had an escort of nearly a dozen F-4s. As we got within 10 miles of the power plant, SAMs were lauched. Lots and lots of SAMs. I got John McCained!

Second mission I flew was an escort sweep for a couple of A-4s that were attacking an airfield up North. There were a lot of Mig-17s and -21s in the air, but I never saw them to engage them. Completed the circuit, returned to my airbase, landing was too hot and too hard. I damaged my Phantom.

Obio, welcome to North Vietnam! :d During the 2008 campaign some of McCain's more malicious detractors suggested that it was his lack of pilot skills that got him shot down. Believe me, over NVN you could have had the skills of Charles Lindbergh and Jimmy Doolittle combined (throw in Chuck Yeager too) and still end up in the Hanoi Hilton. If your number was called, well tough luck. AAA guns from 23mm to 100mm protecting all urban areas and LucTars (lucrative targets) and a SA-2 SAM envelope that pretty much covered the main portion of the country. I may have to check out WOV, would be interesting to see how their default AAA/SAM defenses compare to what I remember from back in the day.
 
Not only do they look good being lauched...once they are in the air, they are hard to see and they are freaking FAST! If they don't hit you directly, they fly in a line for a bit then go BOOM!

AAA is pretty awesome too. I got nailed by some in my F-4.....there I was jetting toward an airfield to drop my bombs....the next thing I knew I was falling from the sky on fire.

Is there anywhere to pick up the strike fighters 2 collection 2009 edition now? It seems to be out of print and I can't fathom exactly why, I don't suppose it was sold anywhere other than the thirdwire site?
 
Yes, Thirdwire's site is the only place to get this sim anymore, unless you stumble across it like Obio did. Its only $19.95, so its not expensive either. I know of at least 3 websites that sell it also, 1 is a download version of the original Wings over Europe, but its selling for $39.95!!!! The 2 other sites sell the original Strike Fighters Project 1, but 1 is the boxed cd, the other is a download again, but its price is $39.95 too!! Why would you want to pay that much when you can get the newer versions for #20.00 less?

Tarps, that is the newest version, and the download comes with the latest patch already installed. You can get the original WoV too, it all depends on how good your pc is. The newer version has better avionics and it handles much higher and more detailed skins, and with shadows turned on, it can hit the FR's pretty good. Run's just fine on my pc, but I have a pretty up to date machine too.


Either version is a lot of fun to use, there are more addons for the original version ATM, but what's out for the newest version is really good too.

At Combat Ace, they have made a massive mod for this sim covering Nam, and its free! A bit of downloading to do, but it has everything in it you could think of! From terrain updates, a large number of different models of ac, ground vehicles, missions and campaigns. They have made versions for both the original and the newer version of WoV, so its available for both! Here's a linlk to see what its about for the original version, just scroll down this page-

Like I said, they have the same thing for the latest WoV, and its great!

BTW Tarps, the Tomcat is an addon, but works in both versions, and it is free!
 
Wanted to buy Strike Fighters 2: Europe for a while but the very first Strike Fighters is still too good with all those mods.
 
Can you purchase all of them and merge them together in one install? Or does the merge leave the games seperate but just allow you to fly the various aircraft from the different games?

its the latter...they are separate installs but you can fly all the different planes in any of the versions.....that is with the '2' series. the original games don't merge but you can manually add the a/c or terrain from one to the other.
 
So I could grab planes for Wings Over Europe and Wings Over Isreal and add them to WOV? Cool!
