F-105

THat would be fun to do in multiplayer with a few people flying low in the Thuds!

Actually, we flew downtown last night in 3 F-105Ds...never did have time to look over my shoulder.

The mission was nearly scrubbed due to mechanicals. However, our maintenance crew was able to put it together at the last minute with great success.
Here are mission photos: 3 F-105Ds out of Nakhon Phanom to downtown Hanoi.

Well, in "thud ridge" ,Cnl Jack Broughton specify that "you can´t see the wings from the cockpit". i will have to look for the exact page in the book for the quotation, but i think the man knows what he is talking about.
Best regards

I've had people tell me that you can't see the wings of the plane I fly for a living from the cockpit, but as I sit in the cockpit right now, I can darn sure see the the last 3 feet and winglets. Of course I have to do a little yoga stretch to see it, and with my face just about touching the glass, but there it is.

TrackIR allows you to see most of what you want to see of the exterior from the VC, as long as it's modelled. Many would prefer it be modelled. If it doesn't make a difference to someone, then ok, but everyone here has a hot button on something they like to see in FS.

Although it is an overall "good" on the great-horrible scale to me; the real detractor for the Alphasim Thud is the targeting reticule. It looks like it was drawn by crayons and then pixilated. Unfortunately, Alphasim/Virtavia HUDs and Reticules are not collimated either.

BTW, where are these loads of skins I have heard about? I can only find 2 for the current Thud, and the old ones don't work.

I did a custom install of the CS weapons pack in it (including the Vulcan bomb trick, but without the modern HUD) and it really adds another dimension to the thud fun. Especially when used with the project Vietnam timescape scenery. I have not tested out the new tracks, but I will soon.
I am eagerly awaiting the RAZBAM version; I have been absolutely stunned and impressed with the A-7, if the Thud is even close it will be great!

Wing tips.

Working ECM on F-105D, F, and G for many years, I will say that with canopies closed You cannot see the wings from either cockpit without being a contortionist. If wearing a helmet, I doubt you could do it at all. Strapped into the seat, not going to happen either. That's a long nose and those wings are way back there.

Did they even have collimated reticles back in the late 1950s when the Thud was being built? Won't make any claims on the presentation of the gunsight. I think it was made by our "effects" guy at the time. If it was that bad I would have figured Cliff Presley would have said something since he was working with us for several weeks before release and putting forth a lot of feedback to get things right.

As far as repaints, besides the ones I painted for the release package I have a few more here. A couple more on the hard drive but I never finished them. Might get around to that. Just did a search at avsim for "F-105D" and found nine.

Well, if you cheat it can be done, just place a camera with a wide angle lense in front of the pilot :wiggle:

Great pic...as the Chinese would say, a picture is worth a thousand words. I'm sure this guy with the camera can see his wingman, therefore he can see his wing, also. Thanks for posting.

You did a great job on the liveries; I would love to see a few more out there, and the correct speed brake animation is icing on the cake, it is just the VC that bugs me. I can send you some screen shots when I get home. Out of the 9 results returned at Avsim, 3 of them are the old format (won’t work with new model), and 2 are fictional. Thanks for the link to your repaints; I’ve been on the Mirage page a thousand times (I’m a huge F1 fan), but never noticed that link (Duh!). That’s another 10 for the collection, thanks.

As far as the absolute definition of collimated HUD (specifically the use of a set of precision ground collimating lenses and combiners), you’re right, the F-105 technology was 2 generations behind. However, from the standpoint of collimated simply meaning “optically aligned”, they were technically collimated reticules. I’m not at home right now, but I believe the VC on the Thud doesn’t use a separate texture application for the reticle, thus it is planar with the main VC panel. I have been meaning to build up a high res fix for the 3 graphic options, but haven’t had time atm.

On the long list of projects I have, is a drop in 60’s era reticle and tracking display. The plan is to make it customizable so that a single freeware gauge could change the color and reticle geometry to match the F-8, F-4, F-105 etc, and include the gun sight, basic missile tracking “dot” (for the F-4 option), range ring and scale without all of the modern bells and whistles (ladder, airspeed altitude etc..) that ruin the ambiance. For me simulation is a way of preserving aviation heritage, so being able meet the personality of the aircraft is paramount.

The pic was shot from the backseat of a F-105F..........november 1968. (source: Sqn & Signal - F-105 Thunderchief Nr.1017 page 40 - first printed in 1974)

Cheers.

Actually, I don't think the picture is cheating at all. It's not a wide angle lens, because the lines are linear. If it was wide angle, there would be a bowing of horizontal lines. The camera is extremely close to this guys head, and the aft portion of the clear canopy is at least 1.5 feet behind his head. Just about everything the cam shows would be visable to the guy holding the cam. I don't think it matters that it's taken from the back seat, either. The single seat version has it's seat in pretty much the same place as the back seat in the dual version.

Really, this is an awesome picture, even if there wasn't a disagreement on how much wing you could see.

I pretty sure you're right about the reticle just being planar with the main VC panel. That type looks very strange when viewed from the side. Kirk's F1 is like that as well.

I like your idea about a new reticle sight. That would be nice. Especially when it works with the new CS weapons set.
