A very sad and at the same time enraging annoucement to make..

Dear moderators and Administrators:
I bring this in the open and public since we caught RED HANDED 2 members of this very same community sharing links to illegal downloads of our latest release.
You 2 low life scum, i know who you´re, i expect some admin or mod to contact me ASAP with the proofs i have.
I´m also aware i´m not the sole victim of these low life...and one of them, YOU "SIR" SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF, YOU´RE A DISGRACE TO THAT UNIFORM YOU ONCE WORE AND TO ALL YOUR COLLEAGUES
You 2 characters, are the kind of rats that this community should fight to banish from our hobby.

Best regards

Prowler

You mentioned "Sir", am I correct in thinking that we're talking about an officer here??

DAMN!!

This thread is pretty disrespectful is you ask me. Although they did something that is less than respectable, I don't think it is appropriate to post something like this in a public thread. And to go as far as insulting their military career... way too far in my opinion.

.....Insulting the military career, yes. Raking them over the coals in one of our forums? I don't think that is a bad thing. They are members here, just like you and I. However, this board is frequented by the developers and users alike, not something you can say for other sites. And that being the case, when one of our developers/friends/fellow simmers exhibits conduct unbecoming a sim-outhouse member, I believe that the right exists (in much the same way as WE berate developers for a 'bug' or 'shortcoming' in a product) to call them out on it. It has to be a two way street. If we can break their nuts, then people who violate rules should have their nuts broken. Simple.

Personally I can't say I see it that way. Whichever way you cut it those incvolved have disgraced themselves, as felix said it is Conduct Unbecoming. Actions like this insult those that do wear a uniform. Petty theft is supposed to be beneath them.
I'd also add that as there is more than one active/former military officer on these boards that noone has yet been named outright... ie. none has yet been "dragged over the coals", not that it'd be such a bad idea mind.

I believe that Ron has not insulted anybody's career. What he had tried to do is to get that person a sense of shame.

If somebody wants the honors accorded to a warrior (as a member of the armed forces), then that person is also subject to the high standards those honors require. And those include not engaging in illicit behavior.

This is why it is possible to punish an officer from something so mundane as having an adulterous affair.

I wanted to clarify this and will not make further comments on this subject.

What is truly disrespectful, is someone condoning, aiding, or abetting the theft of an intellectual property that belongs a community member.
Or anyone else's work for that matter.

Prowler1111 only pointed out that the person involved is a disgrace to his former uniform. That someone is quite lucky he wasn't caught, with his hands in a brother at arms' cookie jar, while wearing that uniform. Blanket Party time.

It pains me, that some people believe, that holding a person responsible for their actions is somehow wrong, or disrespectful...Don

Piracy makes people angry. Ron is angry and I don't blame him. In our hobby there can be few things as despicable as piracy.
Ron has provided proof and we shall act.

I don't think it is wrong to get angry with these people for what they done, I just think the more appropriate thing to have done would have been to just PM the staff and they will take care of it.

You really think pirating a 30 dollar piece of software is worthy of shaming someone who has dedicated themself to defending our country? Not saying it isn't bad, but trying to shame them for doing this when they are a veteran, is completely wrong.

I've also seen evidence of a certain payware Duck on a pirate forum. No wonder people get angry when that happens.

I'm going to have to agree that outing them in public is the right thing to do. they are, after all, thieves. Stealing from us devs is, I'm sorry to say, the equivalent of stealing from all of you that purchase our wares. When something is stolen we have to raise our prices to cover that loss....

I REALLY don't like thieves... (as I have proven to my own detriment)... and for me, the fact that one of these people might have been an officer just makes it worse. Think about it... this is someone who steals but, at one time, was protecting the US of A.... ??? what does that say?

Not sure but I sure don't like it....

This issue has been a major source of pain for myself and many developers I have worked with. At one point I was very active in stomping out various websites who were pirating software, etc. I was even there when a few of them did indeed get their doors shut down. Sadly, it still continues, and it always will.

Some of the web hosts wouldn't even entertain the idea of shutting some of these down, requiring a class action suit for them to even bat an eye. Paypal was a bit generous in helping in some cases however.

I still think the best moment of my anti-piracy career was when I called a specific known payware distributor/pirate at his home number and asked him some very uncomfortable questions about why he was choosing to do what he was doing, and the effects of the payware community by doing such things.

At any rate, it is what it is. I don't feel too bad they got anonymously called out, being a vet myself. Hopefully their sense of honor gets the better of them and they fess up to the issue or they resolve it with the payware developer.

But is it 30 dollars, how many different 30 dollars have they posted and how many 30 dollars have been downloaded using the links and torrents that they and others like them have provided?????

The handle was a front. A US forces uniform was not involved.

Personally I wish he had called them out by name!!!! Sorry to see this happen but the individual is only a soldier of misfortune not of the military!

Just a small point to consider (and in no way condoning these actions) sharing of links is not illegal, misguided but not illegal, only the downloading is. Further more, lets be sensible here, anyone can find just about any piece of payware product they want in less than 3 mins on the internet, in fact anyone looking for genuine FS stuff is hard not to be bombarded with links to payware products from shady sites.

I spent months download illegal (Alphasim) stuff to gain evidence and proof of hosting and being able to prosecute, guess what, jack all happened. We even had a program to HEX code each model so that we knew exactly who had bought it, but when your selling hundreds its a mind boggling task and even when you do prove it, your toothless to fight it. The biggest sites we used to unload with incomplete models, making it harder for thieves to get the genuine article, but all the time your doing that your not doing anything else productive. In the end it becomes counter productive, its a fact of life, isn't ever going to go away.

So before any naming and shaming goes public, y'all better make sure the individuals actually obtained the products illegally and not just spoke about links where items could be obtained under the counter. Knowing is not 'doing', I 'know' lots of illegal sites, does that make me a thief too? and if I sent them to Ron or Colin, or Phil or any other payware member as advisories, does that make us low life's as well?.

Kindest

Michael
