Windows 7 install fix

I loved and enjoyed CFS 3 for many years using OFF, MAW and ETO. Then I up graded my computer. Got Windows 7 and it just ruined it. I got CFS3 installed but OFF was a total no no as it kept saying files were missing and nothing else loaded properly.

I now concentrate on Cliffs of Dover and Rise of Flight.

I have Wings of prey but it just doesn't "grab me"

I am really sorry at the loss of CFS 3. I mourn it as much as the aged Red Baron 2 :icon_lol:

Well it may be a loss to you but I have no trouble running CFS3, ETO, OFF on Windows 7 32 or 64 bit. As do many others. Perhaps you just need to revisit the install instructions again.

This game still lives strong and is enjoyed by many. And many still fly multi player too

CFS3 (tested 3.1a, ETO and MAW) works in Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

BUT.

It doesn't work as well as it does in XP. ATI users will see no difference and for them it doesn't matter which OS is used but Nvidia users will have a large "FFFUUUUUUU" moment when they realize that specular textures don't work anymore and everything looks like an old carpet. I should know - I tried... no matter which drivers (tried the latest version and a few older ones) were used it wouldn't work. I then took out the hard drive, swapped in a blank drive, installed XP, CFS3 and the latest drivers and was blown away by the speculars once again.

In case there's someone out there thinking his eyes are playing tricks after installing W7, no, they aren't...

I have the NVidia 9800 GT on Win 7 64 bit and it runs just fine. Very few stutters and I have sliders up pretty high.

This video was filmed with the above mentioned system with ETO

As I meneted to Cromwell perhaps you need to revisit your install or perhaps system settings. Just because you are having issues on your system doesn't mean it won't work well for others

nVidia display cards

TW, if you can display the specular shine effects in Win7 please let us know how you do. I also have a 9800 and the specular effect in CFS3 which looks beautiful in XP is entirely absent in Win7.

This isn't to say nVidia cards can't display specular shine - they do in FSX - it's just absent in CFS3.

cheers, Tom

I was at my wits end

Brand spankin' new:
PC w/7 and a AMD 3 gig CPU and a GeForce GTX 550Ti graphics card and a 27" Samsung Monitor and the Logitech Extreme 3d Pro and the game runs but all the keystrokes are goofy and could not calibrate the keyboard. Tried everything and then came here and saw this thread and followed the first post about creating a new shortcut etc and all's good. Never would have done it without you guys. Thanks a lot. :wiggle::wiggle:
Imagine hitting the B key to release the brakes and nothing happens and then the E key to start engines and that yellow light keeps flashing to hit the E key to start engines and nothing happens. Frustrating to say the least. :salute::salute::salute::salute::salute::salute::salute:

Or perhaps you need to realize you're missing the speculars too. ;) Those Lancasters didn't shine a bit for what I could see.

I'm not saying Windows 7 doesn't run CFS3 well, as long as it's about of actually running it. There won't be any more stutters or other problems than with XP, in fact it may even run a bit smoother. I was getting 60+ fps on full sliders in both. But the speculars aren't there - system settings have nothing to do with it, drivers don't make a difference. The install was the exact same in both cases so there's no difference there either. I know what I'm talking about, otherwise I wouldn't be writing this.

The easiest way to spot the difference between how CFS3 was made to look and how it looks on ATI or W7 is to check the canopies of AvH Spitfires, the ones Zuyax made. If the plexiglass is clear coloured everything's OK, if it's yellowish on MkV/MkIX and blue on MkXIV there's a problem.

Glad to see you sorted it.

greycap.raf this thread is exactly about getting the game running. It does not run very well out of the box with Win 7 and now after following the instructions here it does. And it runs well I may add. I like the graphics on my system and well if speculars don't run so be it. It's not a deal breaker for me or many other folks

People posting stuff like the mourning of CFS3 and playing IL2 instead or calling the graphics old carpet in this thread is not appropriate in my opinion.

Start a new "Things I don't like about CFS3 win 7" thread and kindly keep this thread less cluttered

Long live CFS3

Cheers

Installed the Koreas mod and ran into the same issue of the keyboard being out of whack so
I followed the same instructions as modding the config file and running in XP SP3 as admin and all is good
to go.
Is this going to be the norm for all the other expansion add-ons like PTO and MAW etc? I suppose so, right?
I need to open M3d (or is it md3?) files. Can anybody tell me how? I want to add my family's picture to my plane's dashboard.

WINDOW 7 INSTALL

NOTE
Modifying the CFS3.exe comes curtsey of Deadmeat1971. Original instructions can be found here
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=9007
Blacksheep-ghost03 and I have Win7 working in both on and off line sessions but have had to use different means to do so.
These instructions assume that your game is installed on a C:\ partition
Main game folder is located at c:\Programfiles\Microsoftgames\Combat Flight Simulator 3
STEP ONE:
Install CFS3. Choose complete install option. Look for and uncheck the option to place short cut on desktop. Follow the instructions to complete the game install. Once done DO NOT choose run game now. Close all windows and go to desktop. If you have a short cut to CFS3.exe on your desktop delete it. Now browse to your main game folder. Right mouse click on the CFS3.exe and select COPY. Go to desktop and select PASTE. The CFS3.exe should now be on your desk top. Right mouse click on it and select rename. Change the name to CFS3win7. Right mouse click on the CFS3win7.exe and select CUT, browse to your main game folder and select paste. In the main game folder you should now have two .exe icons. The original one and the new CFS3win7 one. Right mouse click on the CFS3win7.exe and go to properties. Select Compatibility. Put a check mark in the “run this program in compatibility mode for” and then select Window XP SP3 in the drop down box.NOTE: This is the only choice that will work. SP2 will not. In privilege level at the bottom select “run this program as administrator” Click apply. Click OK. Now right mouse click on the CFS3win7.exe icon and select Send to and Desktop(created shortcut). Close all windows. You should have an icon on the desktop that is named CFS3win7. Go to properties on this and double check that Windows XP SP3 and administrator settings are selected in compatibility. If they aren’t select them and click OK. Run the game for the first time. If it’s OK then apply the CFS3 patches. Test in multiplayer if required
NOTE
This method worked on my system but not on Blacksheep-ghost03. For his system he applied step 2 which involves applying the same settings but to the original CFS3.exe
Step two
If you have installed the game as above and created the new icon and it doesn’t work or won’t fly in multiplayer, delete the CFS3win7 icon from your desktop. Browse to your main game folder and delete the CFS3win7.exe. You should now have only the original CFS3 .exe in the game folder and no icons on your desktop. Right mouse click on the CFS3.exe and follow the same steps as above for compatibility and privilege level. Once done create a shortcut for the CFS3.exe on your desktop. Check that the compatibility and privilege settings are correct. Run the game. If it works apply the CFS3 patches. Test in multiplayer if required.
WINDOWS 7 64 BIT
NOTE
I have Windows 7 64 bit installed. It would not run multi player regardless of the steps performed above and would crash to desktop. Event viewer described an MFC70.DLL error. I browsed and found an old Microsoft article that referred to the same type of issue I was having.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555608
I followed the recommended fix. Go to main game folder and delete the OLEACC.DLL file. After doing this my game runs fine and I can host and join multiplayer games.
Hope this works for you too.
Special thanks to Deadmeat1971 and Blacksheep-ghost03 for their contributions

Hi

Could you try and re-type this as I am having trouble understanding what it means

"however I can play with host did with the same installations like my"

Can you also double check the cfs3Win7 icon on your desktop and make sure that run as administrator and compatibility mode Windows XP SP3 are checked?

Thanks

TW

Does it mean, that if I do host with win7 installation I can joint it by other win7 computer with the same installation of CFS3! Just can't join SOH hosts,
Thanks for replying.

Hi

Folks hosting at SOH are using stock installs of CFS3. If your game is not stock and has add ons or extra planes then you will have trouble joining and hosting at SOH

With the same CFS3 installation on XP I can play without any problems. I think I'm veteran there. I saw You there in the air.
I don't use any addons except NGNG. My setup is 3.1 with the upgrade from SOH to 3.1a. Itt's all. I think the last upgrade doesn't work correctly in the Win7. Doeas it?

OK I think I missunderstood again. Sorry. If you can play with your XP install but have issues with win7 and the game is stock, then there is still something the matter with the Win7 install. It should work just the same at SOH or on any stock install

Yes both updates will work and have to be installed

You might want to try deleting the game install and trying again if you haven't already. It is absolutely nessessary that the options for the CFS3Win7 icon are set properly or it won't work

Have another go and let us know what happens

It works. I didn't know what to do, and tried to delete files from installation.
After deleting of the "oleacc.dl" I was able to connect to the SOH hosts.
Now all is fine. See You in the air.

Thanks for the inspiration.

OFF

Tailwind, I see that you said you got OFF to work in Win 7 64bit. I've tried for hours to get it to work. Did it work with the install instuctions for CFS3 at the beginning of this post? Sorry for asking, have'nt been here for awhile and I'm getting ready to install ETO as well.

Thanks for your time.
