A Lockheed "Rounder"

Hello Milton,

Maybe it's just me :)
But I found the air file (flight model) of the Lodestar weird
I can still fly level under 60 Knots with full flaps and gear down and little trim up and little power
Is this normal or just part of the WIP ?
Just asking

Maybe the attached will help understanding.

Landing speed is 65 MPH or 56.5 knots

ooOOH!! Thanks for posting that spec-sheet, Milton. Helps clear some of the confusion I had about landings in the L-18 too. The plane does seem to be a bit "lofty at landing speeds", but attributed to an excellent design I reckon.

The Flight Models were developed from specs from the manuals by Tom Falley. They appear to be right on to me but time will tell.

The manual has some interesting things to say about the flaps too and Tom tried to implement them this way. I think I posted that once but here is an excerpt.

I knew that there was something unique to the flap design, and their overall effects on the airplane under certain conditions and settings. I have been able to take off from shorter grassy fields easily with minimal flap settings to near full (not full) flaps by controlling the amount of throttle. Just a small experiment.

And with optimal conditions, (properly calculated wing load to weight ratios given air density), no flaps are need from standard paved runways at or near sea level such as those on the eastern Australian coastlines. Like I say... attributes to an excellent design. Gotta hand it to Tom Falley... he's nailed it dead center, IMO.

Tom,

Takeoff Flaps should not be used in normal conditions because of the roll tendency should you lose one engine. The last 4 sentences say it best.

For landings, usually for normal paved runways, only one notch of flaps need be used.
For heavy weights and fuel, or shorter runways, or a slower landing speed is desired, 2 notches are best.

Full flaps are only needed for very short unimproved runways.

EDIT: I uploaded the Lodestar Operation Manual for those interested.

Hello Milt and team!

I'm flying the L-18 Airliner model, and with Gary's paint, its GORGEOUS!! 2 quick questions.

1. Having installed Gary's NAL paint (the only one so far), I've gotten textures for almost everything but the main VC and overhead panels themselves. I see screenshots with them done - where are those?

2. Now this one's pure aesthetics - historical purists may dogpile on me ... that's ok .. :wavey: But I mapped the NAL paint to the PW engine model. Just a personal preference. Doing so means I have no "NAL" markings on the starboard engine, and 3 sets of "NAL" markings on the port, at "12", "3", and "6" and "9" o'clock, as you view the model head on. Is there a way to have that starboard engine texture be like the port, without the markings? I'm not asking Gary to modify the texture for a model that's not historically accurate, just to somehow do for the starboard engine what the port does, with this changeover.

Thanks in advance - love this little jewel.

cheers,

dl

There have been no panel textures done for this aircraft yet to my knowledge.

If you wish, you can simply change the bmps in the panel folder (vc01, vc02, vc03, vc04) to a dark texture or any color to provide a background. Save as 24-bit bmps.

The Wright and P&W engine nacelles do not share mappings, the cowlings and nacelles are very different.

I was hoping someone would step up and do proper panel textures for the VC but that has not happened.

Unfortunately, Nigel's PC is out of commission and with the problems Greece faces right now, he will not likely be back for a while.

EDIT: Attached is what I am using temporarily

Thanks Milt!

I tried the textures - which I see by opening that they're black - but when I drop them into the NAL texture folder, the panel is still the unpainted bright blue. I changed to another model, then reloaded, just be sure. Maybe I'm running an old model? A mapping issue on my end, problably ...

As to the cowls, I renamed the other 3 textures to "eng1_t" - and now I have nice bare aluminum cowls on both sides. Works for me.

Anyway - I know this is still WIP - love the model, and look forward to it in finished form.

dl

That's because the 4 textures go in the Panel folder Sir :)

Awesome C-60 repaint Ferondoe! The green interior exposed frames looks about right for a C-60 too. Also the framing in the nose baggage compartment is close to what the real compartment looks like.

Thanks Milton for uploading the manual, very much appreciated. I'm going to be reading it lots.

And the VC textures, I'll upload them in a few days. I've been unable to put text on the panels - so I've decided to just leave them out in the meantime. Don't worry about your name being bungled up Milton...I get my name bungled up in R/L too and have to put up with it sometimes :biggrin-new:

Civil Harpoon

Hallo Milton,
I downloaded the update for the civil Haroon but do not find the refered plane "pvcwip.zip" can you please tell me where to get the file?

happy engineering

civil harpoon

Thank you Milton,

I must say that for the moment I' m a bit confused with all the super Lockheeds you do!
Which are the last complete Harpoons? or did I misunderstood some thing will they be also in the
Lockheeds (Lodestar)?

Here is a summary of what I have coming:

Harpoons
1) PV-2C - Civilian - no guns or turret (This is the same as the WIP PV2C Civilian I released)
2) PV-2C - Military - 4 versions with different armament configurations
3) PV-2D - Military - 3 versions
4) PV-2D - Civil Tanker
NOTE: Texture mapping for all "C" versions is the same, also all "D" versions have same mapping
NOTE: Panels will be the same for all versions

Lodestars
1) L-18 PW Engines - Passenger
2) L-18-Wright Engines - Passenger
3) C57 - Military Transport PW Engines
4) C60A - Military Transport Wright Engines
NOTE: All versions share same mapping for textures (only the engines have different mapping so unless the painter provided both engine sets, then textures are not swappable)
NOTE: Panels will be the same for all versions

Overall NOTE: Mapping for textures, Panels and VCs are different between the Harpoon and Lodestar because there are no shared exterior body parts. These are completely different aircraft and flight models.

Hi there,

At the moment I am working on repaints of two Lockheed C-60A Lodestars that were operated from 1943 till 1948 by KLM West Indies Division (based at Hato, Curaçao). I hope I'll be able to upload them at SOH within not too long. These will not be the definitive repaints, since both Milton's Lodestar as the repaints are works in progress.

Cheers,
Maarten

I ran into the different engine texture mapping between the original Harpoon D WIP release and the civil C WIP release. I was going to use Nigel's C model base textures as the basis for a "generic" PV-2D in tri color camo and there were problems with where the some of the bits were located between the engine textures of the two models. I've put it on the back burner for now until I can figure out what I want to do and where to go with it next.

As for the panels, I'm pretty satisfied with what I've got cobbled together now using the SOH A-26 gauges.

(trying to "fix" the Wozza FSX Gee Bee Z this morning)
