What is your favorite helicopter?

Virtavia Sea King....

...if only I could get it to fly... the protection software did something strange on my rig and it constantly "pauses" the sim for me in FSX and P3D :(

Mine too is the Virtavia Seaking :) Its also my Favorite in the non-sim world!

The SH-2F. There was one for FS-9 and then someone (I can't recall who) did a RNZN (Royal New Zealand Navy) repaint (both are freeware). I combined the two and tweaked the .air and .cfg files and it is the most nimble sweetest little helicopter capable of carrying two MK-46 torpedoes and 25 sonobuoys. While the SH-60 is the one I fly most often (in FSX) I love the SH-2F both in real life and in FSX. So much capability in such a small aircraft. :adoration:

One I'd love to recommend would be the FSHeliCh Alouette II. I've always liked the real thing and the model isn't bad though I've seen better freeware (now especially). Soundset is ok too. What really lets it down is the crew.. very FS8 if not before:(

Same here Mark. I found a book called "low Level Hell" by Capt. Hugh Mills. He flew the Little Bird for several tours in Nam and wrote the book on tactics, as up to that point there was none. Amazing read and Tim's Chopper is a blast to fly "Low Level".

[...]

That's a very good read, Ed. I think I consumed it three times. Another very stunning book about loach operations is Tom Smith's "Easy Target".

Cheers (also to Tim Conrad for giving us his fine artwork),
Mark

FOR FSX, I've always enjoyed the Alphasim Seasprite. I would like a newer AH-1, will definitely need an S-97, and wish someone would make us a Mojave.

I don't fly them as often as I would like due to my flight controls, Saitek X45, but the helo-trim function makes them much more enjoyable to fly.

Besides the Virtavia Seasprite, this is one of my favorites. Piasecki H-21C, by Mick Posch. Freeware, came out in 2007, so it's "old" but has a great VC. And it looks cool.

I generally avoid helicopters but when I do I like Rick Piper's Bristol Sycamore best. It is a pity he never completed it as it is a Beta.

to upgrade fsx helicopter flight models, try the htr module by Fred Naar.

cera's uh60 is one of the best models out there.

^ that was a fun little flight! Does the Cera UH-60 work in multiplayer now?

I know there are no perfect FSX helicopter FDEs, but I love the way the Cera 60 flies. Does anyone know comparatively speaking, how the Milviz MD530 flies in light of it? That could be my next purchase.

I think it's fair to say that the Milviz 530 flies completely differently. One is light and agile.. the other is borderline 'heavy'.. as are the real ones. I wouldn't be put off by that though. The 530 is a fine model even though it's not my favourite RW helicopter.;)

Well yeah :p I guess what I should have said how believable is the flight model... Because the Cera UH-60 is one of the more believable ones I have flown..

It's a difficult one to answer. Much depends on what you want out of a flight model and how your rig is setup. Is it believable.. I don't know. I like the flight model. It goes exactly where you want it to go and it sounds the part while you're doing it. There's a quick start option but you can run it up 'by the book' should you wish. It really has a lot going for it. One thing though.. on my rig, I often get a 'BEX' error on shutting the sim down after I've flown it. Trying to track down exactly what this is like finding the answer to the universe! I've not seen anyone else report this so I guess it's something unique to my rig.

I have my realism sliders backed off and it flies 'how I like' it to fly. Crank em up and I'm sure it would get livelier. It flies how I would expect one to fly but that doesn't mean a great deal;)
