In defence of MSFS 2024

SOH-CM-2025
I thought long and hard about posting this, and to some this may sound like heresy😈. But I firmly believe that MSFS 2024 is at its core a very good sim. Yes, the initial launch was utter shambles and in hindsight it probably would have been wise if MS/Asobo had taken another year to work on it before release. I assume it was more an executive decision to launch MSFS 2024 to a rigid deadline than the preference of those that were actually working on the sim. Since I skipped MSFS 2020, I cannot make a comparison between both versions. But for the kind of flying I do, MSFS 2024 was stable from SU1 onwards. This despite my feelings about SU3. YMMV of course, depending on the type of flying you do. But for those who feel "burned":angryfire: by the initial release, I really think you should give MSFS 2024 another try. And yes, there's still a lot to be fixed ...

Oh, I've bought it and it is ready on steam to be installed. But I'll only install it after the bugs have been ironed out and when they fix the control assignments.

I have divorced 2020. Kicked it out of my drive, or is that house? I am exclusively 2024. I only use Free Flight. I have never tried the other features. So, if you use Careers, or Challengers, etc. your knots may vary.

Same here John, plus I've found out how to disable unwanted flyable aircraft and AI aircraft in the content.xml so that I only see FSLTL planes at airports and in the air - loading times are now much faster, FPS is rock solid and (almost) no stutters.
For me, all they need to do now is remove the arrival airport NDB from ILS approaches and fix AI aircraft take offs and landings.

I still have 2020, but it's bloated software. Like John I fly pretty much exclusively in 2024. I use the Beam Tracker and Opentrack and in 2020, I get stutters when I move my head. In 2024, I get seamless and steady FPS. Eye candy in 2024 is hard to beat also, much more immersive. Only thing I use from 2020 are a few carry over aircraft I like. They seem to adapt very well.

One thing I will say about 2024 is how it drives my GPU crazy. As soon as it starts the GPU floors the pedal. The fans go to max and the temps climb, and utilization pegs against the ceiling. I guess that is good. It runs smoothly.

I like FS2024 and have done so since its release. Ok, there have been a few little niggles, but is there any such thing as a perfect sim? The sim runs better than FS2020 on my barely adequate PC, and the level of detail is stunning.

In my opinion, it's an incredible example of the developers pushing the envelope, and I think the Asobo team should be applauded for what they have created.

I sometimes think it becomes fashionable to give something a good kicking just because it's not 100% perfect on day one, and people get stuck in that mindset, give a dog a bad name sort of thing.

I believe we have only ourselves to blame for crapware. We would never accept a car that had a missing door, or one who’s engine quits when you tune to a certain radio station. However, we line up, like opening day for deer season in Texas, to purchase the crapware on release day.

Yes, the software developers have some blame. They release the crapware, gather the money from fools like us, and then take their time fixing the most grievous problems. It is shady ethics at best. But hey, a fool and his money is soon departed.

In earlier versions, e.g., F(, FSX, and even 2020, users could fix some of the issues. Now M$ has the software locked down tighter than the girl’s dorm rooms at a Catholic boarding school. We, the users, depend on them to fix the issues on software that we should not have purchased until it was reliable.

That being said, based on a survey of one, I think FS2024 is fairly reliable these days. We need to keep in mind that in the eyes of Microsoft, this is a GAME.

The feedback seems to be improving, but what is putting me off is going through the learning curve again with all the minor tweaks.

I don't think there is anything to tweak unless you really want to. 2024 will recommend settings for you based on your hardware and you can run that and be happy hehe. The default aircraft are reasonable, (some less than others) but the Grumman Albatross, (free Piper Dakota), (free C185),C172, TBM930, CJ4, C700 are really excellent! The PC12 is reasonable as long as you get the mods to fix environmental and beta thrust: https://flightsim.to/add-ons/pilatus-pc-12-ngx/fixes

Don't forget about the T-6 with free mods as well: https://flightsim.to/file/91810/asobo-reno-t-6-improvement-mod
