[Released] Miltech Douglas A-1 Skyraider

Okay. Let me start out by saying "YMMV". I got sort of obsessed last night and today and really decided to try and learn how to manage the powerplant on this thing. It hasn't gone well. I have attempted flying from NAS North Island to NAS Point Mugu in the A-1H at least 10 times so far. Over and over. .....
How far did you get?
I've done 120 NM without engine issues ... it has a few problems to be sorted but not as bad as some are saying.
It's a BIG single-engine plane with a BIG piston engine, not going to be easy :)

Haven't had time to check the video above against my experience, but as a comparison here is a happier video

It's between 120-150 NM between KNZY and Pt Mugu. I just finished a successful flight from KNZY and MCAF Camp Pendleton with no problems. In retrospect, I believe I was using waaaaay too much MP for extended periods of time. The airplane seems to like ~40in MP in cruise, which is about 205 KIAS, with a little tweak to the mixture towards "Normal". Previously, I was cranking along at 43-52in MP, and making 260 KIAS airspeeds for extended periods. Looking forward to testing my theory further on additional flights.

//////////UPDATE/////////////
Just flew another flight from KNZY out to San Clemente Island (and back), with no problems. I also used higher power settings (~45in MP), and was able to cruise quite effortlessly at about 245-250 KIAS with no problem. What I have learned is that power management on the A-1 is a.) nuanced, and b.) requires a deft touch, keeping everything in balance. The airplane continues to grow on me.

I asked Wells Sullivan on that Youtube Post if it was possible we might see an external flight/engine model update from him or elsewhere? He simply responded YES. I am not going to bother saying anything on Miltech's Discord page. That support page seems to muddled up with different reports/issues on a single thread. My eyes hurt trying to dig through all of it. Wells Sullivan said he did the FM for the Milviz P3D version, gives me hope he will fix this. Had Bernt Stolle had anything to do with the FM, it would have been right as well. It was a pleasure working with him on beta testing the FDE of Milviz's F-86 back then. Talk about meticulous work!

I don't have it yet but it seems clear there are issues, I just hope in the clamor to fix it, things don't go to far the other way. Things like tail wheel lock and modulating power on takeoff to not exceed the the rudder authority you have at low speeds is very much a part of flying high powered taildraggers. I am not saying it is the case here but aircraft like the flying iron BF-109 are very rewarding if you take the time to figure out the techniques required

I executed maybe 20 t/o and landings under all kinds of weight and power conditions today and did not have a problem with the Skyraider. It behaves like a typical high power taildragger. I think it even is a bit easier to handle like say the BB P6-C Porter due to its mass and large rudder.
Cruise / engine management is also OK, but you have to stick to the specifications.

The issues I seem to have is rather in the weapon management or other systems, but I think this is due to my ignorance :)

So far I am good with it and enjoy it very much.

Cheers,
Mark

Depends how much you want a Skyraider...the FM isn't perfect, feels a bit dead but I don't get the main problems that Wells Sullivan has in his video
I can dive at 400 Kts without the elevators breaking and my elevators are effective at all control stick positions, though trim affects this a lot.
When I apply full rudder I get yaw then roll and if I hold the rudder input the roll continues until inverted.
Still, Grannies advice is sound...

I have yet to fly the 2020 version, but will do so shortly.

StormILM, did you get two carriers with A-1H and do you own the Miltech Carriers for FS2020/24?

Why would this effect your other airplanes if you created a seperate Profile for the A-1H?
I would bet that there is some tweaking that can be done in the flight_model.cfg to correct the take off roll issues.
This model looks like a Milviz port-over from P3D.

Unfortunately, I kind of feel the same way, but that might change. The cockpit looks pretty good and I like the way they included the PMS50. The sounds are not too bad either from the last review I just watched on YouTube. There is another one besides the original reviewer. The oleo struts seem to be over extended and the exterior model is absolutely filthy, every developer should include at least one factory fresh model, like it just rolled out of the factory.View attachment 176652

What a shot from the 50's, NAS Alameda, California. Looks at all those beautiful A-1H Skyraiders and F8F Bearcats.

Beautiful and clean profile shot.
Oh my that color photo is stunning !!! What a line up!

I still can't get my load manager/map to work correctly. There must be another addon causing an issue with it.

I reset my baseline Rudder input sensitivity back to default now it seems to be a good bit easier to do takeoffs and landings. Still need to try and tune some dampening into the rudder/yaw moments, still way too touchy.

> Those oleo's definitely don't look right to me ?

I think you are right, we saw a few A1-H at Oshkosh and they did not sit as high on the ground like on my screenshots. I think the devs are aware of it.

Cheers,
Mark

There is no question about it they are over inflated. Milviz Corsair is another one that's like that too. It would be nice to see it fixed. The Shrike
F-86 actually sits very nicely on it oleo struts. I was looking at it today. That top photo, hope the owner takes a rag with a bit of solvent and wipes it down. It sure needs it. OMG
