German Night fighters

The Junkers Ju 88 G (night version) was usually operated by a crew of three:• Pilot - responsible for flying the aircraft.• Radio/radar operator - manages communication and the onboard radar.• Machine gunner - occupies the ventral position for defense.

I think all twin engine German night fighters without exception had at least two crew members, if not three or maybe even four on some (Ju 88C, Do 217?).

One of the main benefits of a twin engine night fighter is having a larger airframe to accommodate a larger crew to divide tasks. From just the perspective of maintaining night vision alone, the tasks of pilot and radar operator needed to be separated. The pilots of radar equipped 109s and 190s would have had an extremely difficult task.

Makes a lot of sense. I know that in the Pacific, the Hellcat and maybe the Corsair were equipped with Radar Sets, but the pilot would still have to operate the Radar himself making it more difficult to fly the plane I would think. Thanks.
