1% - 4GB Spitfire HF.MkIXc, Great Britain and Nothern Europe
Spitfire HF.MkIXc MK682 DU-C, Flt Sgt Antonin Ocelka, No. 312 Czech Squadron RAF, North Weald, Autumn 1944.
Spitfire HF MkIXc ML171 RY-C, No.313 Czech Squadron RAF, October 1944 - August 1945.
The Merlin 70 engine of the HF MkIXc was developed to give its best performance at higher altitudes, with the supercharger set up to move into high gear at higher altitude than the Merlin 61/63. (22,000 ft) or 66 (14,000 ft.)
As it turned out, the requirement for such performance at high altitude turned out to be limited, and like the specifically-designed Spitfire Mk VII, the HF MkIX proved in the end to be largely superfluous.
For reasons unknown, many of the limited number of HF MkIXs produced were assigned to Nos 312 and 313 (Czech) Squadrons.
