AICHI D3A-1 Type-99
Allied Code Name "VAL"
CFS3 - V2.83.54
AvHistory 1% Aircraft General Statement and Installation Instructions
It is the intention of the AvHistory 1% project to over time build the most accurate aircraft that the CFS3 software can support. The development of a 1% aircraft requires specific and in many cases dramatic changes to the aircraft delivered with the MS game as well as the addition of aircraft built from the ground up by third parties which were never included in the original MS game. We believe that because the AvHistory 1% aircraft are materially different they should not be mixed with "box stock" aircraft in online combat.
All the planes 1% listed for download are qualified for use in our AvHistory William Tell Meet Air Combat Ladder. For information and to get the sign up sheet for the ladder please go to the LINKS section at http://www.avhistory.org
No AvHistory 1% aircraft maybe provided for download from any site without express written consent of AvHistory. Additionally, direct linking to our download site is forbidden.
AICHI D3A-1 Type-99 VAL
This aircraft was built by SARGE using version 2.83.54 of the AvHistory 1% Assembly Line process. The 1% version of this plane is based on Stephan Seybolt's visual . The Val is from carrier Hiryu and a photo caption that matches the paint created by Robin-100 states that it was taken on New Guinea on February 21, 1942. Others who contributed to the plane are listed in the original credits file
The depicted D3A1 was also photographed [circa end of March 1942] in Borneo when the plane received added details, like a white piping to the red tail code
At Pearl Harbor, BI-263 was the #2 wingman in the 22nd Shotai, within the First Buntai. It was flown by Petty Officer Second Class Ichiro Sudo with radioman/gunner PO2c Tsumoru Tazaki...their target was the USS Helena.
It should also be noted that the word "Chutai" is also a correct term in both IJA/IJN for "Squadron" but used at higher headquarters...the Japanese Navy unit level men preferred a "Navy" term: "Buntai"
The Aichi D3A Type-99 "VAL" was the standard Japanese carrier-based dive-bomber during the opening stages of the Pacific War. The D3A1 completed carrier trials aboard the Kaga and Akagi, and entered operational service with the navy in China and Indo-China.
A total of 129 of these dive-bombers was carried by the task force that launched the attack on Pearl Harbor, and in the Indian Ocean on April 5, 1942, an attack of fifty-three 'Vals' sank two British heavy cruisers in just nineteen minutes - every bomb released at the radically maneuvering warships was a hit or near miss
At the time, the D3A enjoyed a bombing accuracy of 80 - 82 percent, this changed in late 1943, when the loss of skilled pilots saw the bombing accuracy drop below 10 percent.
Despite its importance in these engagements the D3A was produced in only relatively small numbers - 478 of the D3A1 and 816 of the more streamlined D3A2. various sources
