Hans-Jacob Arnoldy was posted to 4.JG77 in September 1939. His unit was assigned to Norway and his first victory was recorded on 12 April 1940. He claimed 6 total victories in Norway. His unit was re-assigned to Greece and on 14 April 1941, Arnoldy shot down a Hurricane taking off from Larissa Greece. This was his 7th and last victory. His aircraft, W. Nr. 5277 "White 5" was hit by fire from Flt. Lt. John Mackie's 33 sq Hurricane and the bullets hit him in the chest. He bailed out and was also fired upon by Greek troops. He died a short time later, but his plane made an almost perfect belly landing. Only two bullet holes were found below the cockpit hood, in line with the pilot's chest.
