Werner Moelders began his fighter career in Spain and is noted for being the originator of the Rotte (2 plane formation) and Schwarm (4 plane formation) Most air forces in the world at the time, and into WW2 used the Vic, a tight 3 plane formation.
His score in WW II was opened on 20 September 1939 near Merzig on the German-French border, and by the time of the German offensive in the West he had 9 victories.
As commander of III/JG 53,Moelders was shot down and captured for three weeks after a fight which took place at Campiegne, France, on 5 June 1940.
He was then ordered to proceed to the Eastern Front and took part in Operation Barbarossa and subsequent campaigns, scoring an additional 42 victories.
In the fall of 1941 the German advance to the East was stopped. During that time, the Reich Minister of Arms Ernst Udet commited suicide and Goering called Moelders to Berlin for Udet's funeral. On the morning of 22 November 1941 Werner Moelders took off as a passenger from Chaplinka airfield onboard a He111. The flight was in a heavy rain and extreme winds. The plane crashed killing everyone aboard.
Altogether, he participated in aproximately 300 combat missions, claiming 101 victories in WW II and 14 in Spain. In his honor JG51 was given the name of "Moelders."
