P-40B (serial unknown) 'White 160' of 2.Lt George S Welch, 47th PS/15th PG, Haliewa, Hawaii, 7th December 1941. George Welch secured his place in history when he scored four victories on the first day of the Pacific War. The P-40 units in Hawaii were in the process of changing their markings system when the Japanese attacked on 7 December 1941, and the exact scheme worn by the 47th PS P-40 that Welch was flying that day may never be known for certain. Current research suggests this is the most likely candidate. Welch joined the 36th FS/8th FG in New Guinea during the latter part of 1942 and became an ace when he scored three victories while flying a P-39 one year to the day after his Pearl Harbor exploits. He went on to score 16 kills during the war, but was killed while testing the North American F-100 Super Sabre in 1954.

Historical skin of the Hawk 81-A-2, (P-8168 or P-8109), "68", 23 F.G. 3 P.S. Flight Leader Charles Older, Kunming, China, early 1942. 'Flying Tiger' emblem was adopted on AVG aircraft since end of March 1942.
