The Baleares class was a Spanish version of the USN Knox class. The helicopter deck was substituted by two Harpoon launchers and an antiarcraft SM 1 launcher, and a 3D radar was added. Thus, an antisubmarine frigate (the Knox class) was transformed in a multirole one. The Baleares class was the backbone of the Spanish surface fleet until the F100 class (Alvaro de Bazán Aegis frigates) were launched.
