Bristol Bolingbroke MkIV 9140 P, No.115 Sqn RCAF,Patricia Bay, mid-1943
The Bolingbroke was the Canadian Fairchild (Canada) built version of the Bristol Blenheim MkIV; the initial batch of Bolingbroke MkIs were identical to the British Blenheim MkIV, while the Canadian-modified MkIV had Canadian and American instruments in place of the British ones. A small number of Bolingbroke MkIVs were fitted with Pratt & Witney Twin Wasp Junior engines, but owing to their reduced power, performance was not considered satisfactory and production continued using British Mercury engines. Apart from operational coastal duties, many Bolingbrokes served as trainers and target tugs.
The Bolingbroke entered service with the RCAF on 15th November 1939 and was used by operational Home War Establishment squadrons of the RCAF until March 1944. No.115 Sqn used Bolingbrokes from August 1941 to August 1943.
Unlike the Blenheim, of which only one example has been preserved in Finland, a significant number of Bolingbrokes have survived.
