Just prior to outbreak of war about 200 Mk. Is were produced as Mk. IFs as day/night fighters with a belly pack of four .303 machine guns. As day fighters they suffered badly at the hands of the Luftwaffe so all five squadrons became night fighters, At the same time the RAF were experimenting with Airborne Interception radar and as sets became available Blenheims were equipped with AI Mk. III. Even with turrets removed Blenheims found it hard to chase down faster German a/c but eventually became successful night fighters with many kills to their credit. These a/c remained in service until replaced by the faster, more powerfully armed Beaufighter in late 1940 and 1941.
