Douglas C-53D-DO Skytrain NC 19912 C/n 11716 Serial Number 42-68789, originally delivered to the U. S. Army Air Forces on 25 May 1943. It was transferred to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation on 18 Dec 1944. Pan Am leased it in 1945, and later bought it outright in August 1949, convered to a DC-3 and assigning it to PANAGRA. Pan American-Grace Airways, better known as Panagra, was an airline formed as a joint venture between Pan American World Airways and Grace Shipping Company. This DC-3 was later leased to Treasure Cay Ltd in July 1963. After being returned off lease, Pan Am assigned it to Avianca, registered HK-1341X. N19912 ('S CLIPPERLE) was used in 1963, Frankfurt - Stuttgart, because of major runway repairs occurring in Stuttgart. This plane had R-2000 engines, and was flown from Miami for this job. The story made the front page of Pan Am's in-house magazine, in 1963.
