DR2 1% Bf109G-2 White 4 Chevron, Oberst Gustav Roedel, Kommodore JG 27, Catania, June-July 1942. This aircraft was found abandoned at Catania airfield when it was taken by Allied troops in July 1943. It will have been one of the last aircraft to leave the production lines wearing the North African camouflage scheme of RLM 78 Hellblau and RLM 79 Sandgelb.

Oberst Roedel commanded JG 27 from 22nd April 1943 until 29th December 1944. He survived the war with a score of 98, his final kill being a USAAF P-38 which he downed on 5th July 1944. After leaving JG 27, he served as Kommandeur 2. Jagddivision until the end of the war. After the war, Roedel joined the newly-formed Bundesluftwaffe in 1957 and retired in 1971 with the rank of Brigadegeneral.
