CFS2 F4U-1D of Navy Squadron VBF-83. This is a repaint of the stock F4U-1A TEXTURES ONLY. This aircraft represents an F4U-1D of VBF-83 aboard USS Essex CV-9 4 March - 15 August 1945. VBF-83 replaced the 2 Marine squadrons VMF-124 and VMF-213 which began the F4U's operational shipboard legacy aboard Essex in December 1944. VBF-83 participated in the heaviest aerial combat of ship based F4Us on 18 March,destroying 17 Zekes, a Judy plus 9 probables and 2 damaged loosing 3 F4Us. VBF-83 has the distinction of scoring the last F4U kill of the war, a C6N Myrt reconnasiance plane shot down by VBF-83 skipper LCDR T.H. Reidy. As the two waves of strike aircraft crossed the beaches, they were recalled as an official cease fire began between allied and Japanese forces. Joe Royal
