Fairey Battle MkI, Finnish Air Force

Fairey Battle MkI, Finnish Air Force 2024-06-14

Fairey Battle, hypothetical Finnish Air Force variant, late 1941-42.

The Finnish Air Force did not in fact use the Battle, but given the various British and French types delivered between late 1939 and early 1941, the Battle might well have figured on the list. By the end of 1941, they would have looked much like this, with the specific Finnish green and black camouflage and yellow identification markings.

The FAF did operate Hurricanes, Lysanders, Ripons, Blenheims I, II and IV, MS-406 and 410 and CR.714, which meant that at the outset of the Continuation War on 25th June 1941, it was largely equipped with what the Luftwaffe would consider as 'enemy' aircraft types.

In theory, the Battle had a spinner. In practice however, this spinner chafed badly on the cowling and was normally removed in Commonwealth use. The spinner included in this pack is simply a fictitious Finnish Air Force modification designed to increase the Battle's hopelessly poor performance.

It is worth noting that the Finnish swastika has no connection whatsoever to the Nazi one, and predates it by some years. It is still in use today.
