FS2004/ FSX Scenery Objects: Classic American Trains Library
By Dan French
HISTORY: There isn't much rail equipment, especially U.S. models, available for use in Microsoft's Flight Simulators. I provided a rudimentary supply of modern equipment in my Dan French Core Libraries series, but these are FSX models only.
Classic flyers have been without. At the request of Chris Gerlach, I have created a basic static model library for use in both FS2004 and FSX sims. The models are very basic (not intended to be highly detailed or accurate) but may help enhance the flavor of urban scenes. This library contains over 50 models of locomotives (steam and diesel),freight cars, and heavyweight and streamline passenger cars to help you fill your tracks with rail equipment. Built in FS9 modelling, they should work in both FS2004 and FSX sceneries. Night lighting included on some engines and passenger cars. See what you think.
INSTALLATION OF LIBRARY:
1. Download the dlf_lib_ClassicAmericanTrains.zip file to a temporary folder and extract all the files.
2. Place or copy the entire folder "Classic Trains Library" into your FSX or FS2004 / Addon Scenery folder.
3. Turn on Flight Simulator
4. At the main menu, click on and open the SETTINGS button.
5. For FSX: Under "Other Settings" click on and open the "Scenery Library." For FS2004: Under "Scenery" click on and open the "Scenery Library"
6. Click on "Add Area", then navigate to "Addon Scenery." Double click to open, select the "Classic Trains Library" folder you added above and click the "OK" button.
7. At this point, the title of the folder should appear in the "Area List" menu of Flight Simulator with a check mark in the "Enabled" column.
8. Click the "OK" button and exit /close Flight Simulator. The next time you fly, the library should be in place.
9. Use the placement tool of your choice to put the models in your scenery.
CREDITS: Structures created in Google Sketchup and converted with Arno Gerretson's Model Converter X, one of the most valuable tools out there for model making. THANKS for hours of fun!
Many thanks to Chris Gerlach for advice and test "flying".
