Usio's USS Ward. A Wickes class destroyer launched and commissioned in 1918. De commissioned in 1921, then recommissioned in 1941 and sent to Pearl Harbour. Ward fired the first American shots of WW2 when it sunk a midget Submarine outside Pearl Harbour some hours before the main attack. Converted to a high speed transport in 1942, Ward served in the SW Pacific. In the Leyte invasion on 7 Dec 1944, Ward was attacked by Kamikaze aircraft, being hit by one and, mortally hit, was sunk by gunfire from USS Obrien
