Repaint of the FDG P51-D. P-51D, 44-63983, 457th Fighter Squadron, 506th Fighter Group. The pilot of this aircraft was Captain John Wesley Long Benbow, 'D' Flight Commander and later the Operations Officer for the 457th Fighter Squadron. Captain Benbow was killed over Nagoya, flying this aircraft, on July 16, 1945. The 506th Fighter Group flew VLR missions to Japan from North Field on Iwo Jima between April 1945 and the end of the war. I am deeply indebted to Capt Benbow's nephew, John Benbow, for supplying photographs of this aircraft and others of the squadron.
