On 31 December 1933 the Latecoere 300 achieved an international record by covering 3,679km non-stop flight. Thereafter it operated the Air France South Atlantic mail service between Dakar and Natal, until it was lost at sea with pilot Jean Mermoz on the 24th crossing on 7 December 1936. Impressed by the record, French Aeronavale ordered three Late 302 derivatives with more powerful engines and provision for four 125 bombs and three Darne 7.5mm machine guns. The all-metal two-step hull accommodated an eight-man crew with sleeping accommodation and most of the fuel. The cockpit was partially elongated sheltering a nose gun/observer position. They were used until 1941.
