Across the Oder River 22 Jan 1945. Before the collapse of the Western Front, the Germans had repulsed every Russian attempt to drive across the Oder River to Berlin. This critical crossing would have Russian soldiers advancing on German soil for the very first time. The year 1945 began as witness to the near total defeat of the Wermacht in the East. First the surrender at Stalingrad exactly two years ago. Then the German retreat west through Poland with two years of the most brutal battles of the war. Their corridor of withdrawl under constant attack on 3 sides. Finally, they were squeezed back across the new Front Line, the Oder River. There are no live Germans on the Eastern shore. Now the Russians must secure the rail and roadway bridges along this 5 mile front where the river is very shallow. They must cross the Oder River today. The Germans will try to stop them. It is dawn, 22 Jan 1945. We begin here.
