Built at the Supermarine factory at Southampton, it made its first flight on 23rd February 1940 and was delivered to 92 Sqn at Croydon on 6th March. Whilst being flown by Pilot Officer Peter Cazenove and wearing the individual code letter “J” and no Squadron codes, P9374 was shot down over France on 24th May and made a successful belly landing on the beach near Calais. Enveloped by sea and sand the wreck was hidden until exposed by a storm in 1980. Recovered by Frenchman Jean Louf it passed through various owners until rebuilt by Historic Flying at Duxford.
The Spitfire made its first post-rebuild flight on 1st September 2011.
