Spitfire MkI X4277 XT-M, Flg Off Richard Hillary, No. 603 Sqn, Hornchurch, September 1940
Flg Off Hillary, an Australian in the RAF, scored four confirmed, one probable and one damaged in this aircraft before being shot down on 3rd September off Margate by Hptmn Bode of II./ JG 26. Despite appalling burns, he managed to bail out and was picked up by the Margate lifeboat. While recovering in hospital, he wrote the best-selling book "The Last Enemy". He was killed on 8th January 1943 in a Blenheim accident.
