DER KESSEL: On this date 64 years ago, we begin the End... With his 6th army trapped inside a ring of Soviet armor, Generaloberst F. Paulus informed Hitler that he only had 6 days of food for his troops. Similar shortages of fuel, ammunition, clothing and all other materiel needed to sustain an army in the field were now building to a crisis. Morale remained fairly high among the Germans, and they lightheartedly nick-named their position "Der Kessel" - The Kettle. However, what the post-war world would soon come to know as "The Stalingrad Cauldron", was no laughing matter. One of the finest armies in history, totally surrounded by armor and artillery, was about to die from starvation, disease and exposure. Your 4th Panzers, under Field Marshal H. Hoth, are trying to pierce through to the temporarily secured airbase stronghold. Perhaps opening a western corridor of escape for the trapped 6th Army.
