1911 Curtiss-Ely Replica First Flights

Bomber_12th

SOH-CM-2025
I had been following this build for a good part of this year, and it is awesome to see it flying. Built to be part of the 100-years of Naval aviation celebrations next year, this is a replica of the 1911 Curtiss that Eugene Ely piloted onto and off of a platform on the USS Pennsylvania in January 1911. The finish on the aircraft is the closest approximation of what the original looked like, based on historical records and photographs - the center section panels and the rudder were taken from an earlier aircraft, called the Hudson Flyer, and were silver, while the rest of the aircraft was new construction, for the 1911 flights, and was probably clear doped, simualated with cream in this reproduction.

Video of the first couple of flights can be found here:

It is already booked for various events next year, commemorating the 100 years of Naval aviation - though a legacy flight partner has been hard to come by...

I'm very tempted to build one for myself now - virtually of course. :)
