• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

I remember the feeling of total shock watching the news and seeing all of those people standing on top of the wall. Amazing.

Just texted my parents, who are celebrating right now at the former Bornholmer Strasse checkpoint (or somewhere in the area).

The message was something like "Happy fall of the wall, comerades!"

Of course we all know that "The Hoff" David Hasslehoff, was instrumental in the re-unification of Germany

Twenty-eight years ago, my Mom, who came to the US in '57, died without knowing the fate of her cousins who happened to be on the wrong side of that wall. I just wish she could have lived to see it come down. She prayed so hard every day that she might find out what happened to her kin... I looked over to the East side as a boy between '69 and 75', and I, through my young eyes, could never fathom how one man could do this to another. Thank God it is no more.....

few people know that the real reason the wall came down is because they just weren't that good at building walls. once they saw the reaction the rest of the world gave them, they were like
"ummm... yeah! we meant to do that!"

It wasn't just the wall that killed people, it was the border guards, watch dogs, traps and anti-personnel mines that did.

A few metres of concrete alone don't manage to stop anyone. It was more symbolic than of any use.

you're right of course. i somehow thought my attempt at levity would be obvious. maybe i should have used more smileys.

Sure doesn't seem that long ago, though it certainly was.
