200mhz worth it?

I got my E6700 overclocked to 3ghz right now, however im having thoughts of perhaps pushing it to 3.2ghz when i get my new RAM
I would really want 3.33 unfortunatley 3.3 is where the second core is the weak link.

Question: Is attempting an additional 200mhz fomr what i have now worth the effort?
 
Yep, it is.


Always go for the maximum possible for one component. May it be RAM, cooling, FSB, etc...
 
I really don't think you will see or feel any difference between 3.2 and 3.3...

But you will see and feel the difference from 3.0 to 3.2

There is a line where things are real good and work and where you cross that line and push to much....

Nah but seriously, not everyone can, some cores cant even overclock by 100mhz.

But scratch this, im not getting up to 3.2, guess ill have to make do with 3. Second core is the weakest link.
 
You're right, not all CPUs overclock equally well. Usually the later releases overclock better than the initial release. That said, I bought an E6700 right after they came out and it overclocked well. The CPUs in my sig are typical. The computers are very nearly identical. The Q6700 (later release) overclocks better than the QX6700 (early release). The Q6700 was a LOT cheaper than the QX too. :frown:

I'd think that you could get 3.4GHz out of an E6700 without too much trouble as long as you have a decent CPU cooler. Have you tried running your RAM at 1:1? Have you increased the voltages any?
 
I'm not new to overclocking, so yes i have pretty much exhausted everything, its the second core that just does not want to.
Oh and one also does not want to run ones ram in 1:1 mode... thats poor for performance.
 
FSX performance scales pretty well with CPU clock, so adding 200MHz on 3GHz will give a 5-6% gain.

And I have to disagree with any blanket statements that 1:1 is bad for performance. While it may be true your RAM runs at a slower clock speed, that is only part of the picture. Of course the timings must be as tight as possible, but my Core 2 systems always performed best when linked and synced. There's a lot information out there indicating 1:1 is optimal.
 
Old information, and prettty much overrated.
Recent information indicates that the 1:2 ratio is the optimal configuration.
 
These were settings from the P5W DH Deluxe I built a long time ago with DDR2 1066 memory. These are tweakable options you will be required to alter in order to achieve the 3.66GHz overclock. The frequency/voltage menu houses the majority of the options required to achieve this overclock. The Core 2 Duo E6700 processor clock multiplier is set to x10 by default and the BIOS would not allow this value to be altered as it is locked on the processor. First start by increasing the FSB from 266MHz to 366MHz and then select the DDR2-1100MHz setting; assuming you have memory such as the Corsair PC8500 that can achieve such a high frequency. The memory timings used at DDR2-1100 were CAS5-5-5-15.

The PCI Express frequency was set to the default 100MHz setting and the PCI clock frequency was also set to the default 33.3MHz. Other than this, the only other options that required tweaking were all the voltage settings. The Corsair PC8500 memory requires 2.0v when operating at 1100MHz in order to maintain absolute stability. The processor ran best at 1.3500v, the FSB termination was set to 1.40v with the MCH at 1.55v and the ICH at 1.20v. Once these nine simple alterations were made to the BIOS it was smooth sailing at 3.66GHz.

I ran it up as high as 4.0 but there was no real benefit in FSX at that clock speed

Mate, thanks but like i said i already know all about overclocking, its just that this is one of those unlucky chips that wont overclock very high.
Sad and unfortunate as it is, it happens.

Ill just stick with the 3GHz i have already. Where i lowered the multiplier to 9 in order to get the better FSB speed.
 
Could I overclock my FX 5100? I have got 2.8 on it now
